What I Know And Remember About Baseball - Batting Slumps

For what ever the reason, nearly every person who has played baseball runs into a slump. The prospect of buying a base hit is all that seems left for the player to get past the desperation of hitting anything.

Pressure placed upon ourselves for letting the team down, pressure from out statistics going in the toilet and pressure from teammates; while nothing is said, the looks and actions tell the real story of what they are holding back. It can be a spiral that places doubt in all your abilities, creating hesitation and second guessing what you already know what to do.

Batting slumps can do far more that merely divot the batting averages. It is important for Players and Coaches to recognize these slumps and do all they can to get their player, teammate back on track. Any chain is only as strong as its weakest link. All links get fatigued and need the time and attention of restoring the temper.

Baseball Players in batting slumps have great difficulty in observing their actions objectively. The best meaning parent can have this same trouble of objective detachment. Even they Players coach can loose the objective focus it takes to figure out what the real trouble is.

Younger Players have the most difficulty developing a consistent swing throughout the season. Constantly changing bodies is the number one culprit. Growth spurts, hormone changes, broader interests, emotions; you name it, everything a healthy growing body goes through affects their swing to some degree.

Intensity changes in activity is largely overlooked as contributors to swing changes. If your Player was dynamite during spring ball but seemed to unwind in summer ball, look to the off diamond activity. It is likely you will find the during spring ball and the school year the Player was on a good regiment. The freedom of summer and no school the structured day to day is gone.

Enterprising Players take the summer time to earn the dollars necessary to support their dreams. Jobs available to these people are usually heavy on the labor. Its simple physics to deduce that heavier work plus longer work hours will invariably build strength. Now that 31 they had been swinging like a pro is coming around too fast and at all sorts of wood chopping angles.

Now that we have covered the detrimental affects of a batting slump, the never ending array of reasons why the slump started and that the inner circle of the Players world may not be able to identify the issue, is there a fix?

Back to the basics, first up, put the bat on the ball. Do the T work under the Coaches eye. Use video to slow things down to take a bit by bit look. If the corrections are not working, seek a once over from a different coach. One of the wonderful things about baseball is the willingness of all Coaches to see all Players succeed. Be it League, Division or School, there is someone closer than you think that would be more than happy to spend and hour to two getting your swing back on track.

Time spent at the batting cage can be useful too. Particularly good is bunting in the cage, yes bunting. The batting slump is a simple result, the bat is not being put on the ball. So, when you can go to the cage and drop a tokens worth of pitches dead, you are now putting the bat on the ball. Start by being square to the machine and catch each pitch with the bat. Once that is done, take your normal stance and go through the whole motion. Drop another token and drop those pitches.

Even if your batting slump is mid season, developing your bunting skills are practical training. If your not ready to swing away, bunting yourself on base is still a base. While your out there, go ahead a steal one too. Plus when you are at the plate, and the pitcher hangs a cure ball, well, smashing that one is going to be a confidence builder.

No access to a baseball batting cage, no problem. Toss yourself the baseball and hit it into the backstop or other net that is not likely to break or get you into trouble. Again, the object is to put the bat on the ball. Even a bad toss you have to chase a little bit to hit is ok. Hitting from different locations, walking to retrieve the ball and hit again; drills like this add variation you will not find at stationary batting Ts or cages.

Inner city Players have options too. Grab your buddies and go play some stick ball. When your buddies are not available, do the toss drill above with a stick bat and golf ball size whiffle ball.

The solution to a baseball batting slump is to discover what has changed and make the corrections to bring back your success. Get back to the basics of putting the bat on the ball in varying situations not all customary and usual.

Above all, the most significant thing you can do to end your slump is to be patient with yourself.

Propulsion Short

Imagine for a moment that the singing voice is comparable to a vehicle. As with an inoperable or faulty engine or transmission totally crippling your vehicles ability to perform, so does the voice suffer much the same fate with the essential components not operating at their optimum in tandem. Just think, the basic operating vehicle = body / container + engine + transmission combined with various other important components which work in conjunction with one-another. Teamwork!

The voice works in much the same fashion. Body / container = whole body but specifically the trunk or torso, throat, hard and soft palates, head, nose, mouth, tongue, teeth, and lips. The engine power = diaphragm and stomach muscles generating and propelling air pressure, the transmission = vocal folds / vocal cords which conduct the air torque from the diaphragm to transmit your vocal tone and pitch along with various other components in conjunction with one-another to produce the smooth operating singing voice.

Even with all the main components operating to their optimum in your vehicle, something which seems so small and insignificant as a tune-up which is often ignored or forgotten, will cause the rough and unstable operation of your vehicle or bring it to a grinding halt! The fine tuning of the singing voice is just as important. In this sequential order, your vocal delivery should operate most favorably. Breath intake, breath propulsion or projection from the diaphragm, proper airflow and control through the vocal folds / vocal cords along with proper phrasing and vocal spacing, smooth and rounded tone generations with resonance, and full control of both Vibrato and Pitch in one's singing voice.

The only thing on this planet that sounds good while rattling, shaking or vibrating uncontrollably is the sound of preparing a delicious milk shake. Your vocals have no business what-so-ever sputtering, rattling, shaking or quivering uncontrollably, or any other adjective that describes arbitrary motion. If your voice displays any of the aforementioned conditions, then your vocals are indeed in need of a vocal tune-up. Specifically addressing the Vibrato and Pitch elements which will fine tune the vocal folds, as to allow them to be conducive to the smooth singing voice then allowing precise intervals, runs, emoting faculties, and colorful embellishments to be added to the singing voice for it's own unique signature and flavor.

In short, your vocal vehicle should perform accurately and smoothly on a consistent basis. Getting where you need to be vocally without fail. In all other areas of life, being stable is the one quality that is universal and essential to EVERYTHING! The singing voice is no different. When the basic and elementary components which are the building blocks of the singing voice are stable and solid, as the foundation to anything-else - you will then be in a position to build as you will onto it without concern what-so-ever!

It takes only 2 elements for anyone to accomplish anything! The desire for it and the determination to see it to a successful completion! Most interest in life are like a bank account - ( you can only get out of it what you put into it.) Need Running Shoe Advice Please...?

I am starting to get into running a lot more and need a good shoe. I have been running in my Nike Shox and they are really hurting my feet on the outermost part of my foot. I am 5ft. 9" and 170 lbs. I think I have a mid-high arch. My girlfriend loves her Mizuno Wave Riders, so I was thinking about the Mens Mizuno Wave Rider 12 or the Mizuno Wave Creation 10. I have read that the Creation are a bit stiffer and not sure if that would provide as much cushion. Please give me your opinion and thoughts. I know I 'should' go to the store and try them on, but I really live in the burbs' and would rather just buy them online.

A. Nike Shox are horrible for running!! Get out of those as soon as possible!!

B. Every foot is different and every shoe fits every foot differently. You really should try them on before you buy them. All shoe brands run different in sizing. If you don't have a specialty running store near you go to a dick's sporting goods store ( which are usually available in every suburb). Ask questions about the shoes you are getting i.e. arch support? cushioning? (your general store employee should have some knowledge).

C. I have run in almost every brand of shoe. I used to be a great fan of Nike's but I now love Asics. The Asics 2140's have changed my life! But remember its all about what shoes suits you and your running lifestyle.

Gender Specific Running Shoes

Do men and women need the same support when it comes to running shoes?  The shoe company Mizuno doesn’t think so.  They’ve introduced what they call “Gender Engineering†into their new line for 2009.  According to Rod Foley, who is the Director of Marketing for Mizuno, “We have learned through extensive research that there are fundamental differences between the running styles of men and women.  Gender Engineering adjusts to those issues by creating shoes that more closely fit the different running styles of the male and female runner, in return maximizing performance.â€

So what are the differences that Mizuno has identified?
Men tend to be heavier than women and so their shoes have to be able to bear the extra weight.  Each step a male runner takes exerts greater force on his body, and the impact of his foot hitting the ground is much more intense.  In order to protect the feet and the knees, Mizuno has designed a male running shoe with a wider and slightly flared sole.  This wider sole means that the shoe will distribute the stress of the impact over a larger surface area, which ultimately reduces the pressure exerted on the feet, knees and hips.  A wider, flared sole also promotes stability, enabling male runners to feel more secure in their stride.

Women, on the other hand, have a wider pelvis, which causes their ankles to roll inward as they run (a process known as pronation).  Over pronation – which occurs when the feet roll excessively inward – can put unhealthy stress on the ankles and knees.  The Mizuno Women’s running shoe takes this danger into account, designing shoes that reduce the inward roll of the ankle.  These running shoes have a flexible sole with flex grooves and a rounded heel – all features that result in a softer, more controlled landing.

Some people dispute the usefulness of these gender-specific features, pointing out that both men and women have a tendency to overpronate and that a flared sole is nothing special.  Perhaps rather than assigning these characteristics to specific genders, it would be more useful to assign shoes based on running style or body type.  For example, an athletic shoe with a wide, flared sole would be advertised as an athletic shoe for people over a certain weight.  Or an athletic shoe with a flexible sole and flex grooves would be labeled as a shoe for people who overpronate.

Youth Baseball Hitting - How To Fix Your Baseball Swing

Youth Baseball Hitting -To hit the ball well takes a lot of practice. Youth baseball is actually easier than for older players because there is only the basics to learn and develop. This makes it easy for as as coaches to improve our youth baseball teams hitting.

Download Super 8 Hitting System techniques

We still must do it right. Practice does not always make perfect. The practice must be effective and done correctly or the mind and body will instill the wrong mechanics.

Hitting off the tee - has probably been a lost art. It is however making a comeback in certain circles. I have always started batting practice by hitting off the tee. Yes..all ages. Purpose of the tee is to load the bat and get our weight back. First check that the players hands are in the right place..batting stance should comfortable. Second, Load the bat (Body and hands go slightly back and front foot comes up) Third, short quick swing.

Common mistakes to look for and avoid is the player dropping his hands and and weight back to far which is caused by wrapping the hands around the head. Wrapping the bat and Dropping the hands is usually the youth baseball player trying to hit a hard fly ball. It lengthens the swing and there will difficulty in hitting the ball correctly(popups) if at all, in live pitching.

Soft Toss - My favorite way to practice hitting. A youth baseball coach (or whoever is doing the tossing) can get a lot of control over the ball and watch the mechanics without fear of injury. The most common way I see soft toss done is from the side of the batter. I prefer to use a screen and toss from the front. This better simulates the pitch and the tosser and see the hands, head, and stride better too. Franklin L-Frame Pitching Screen
Work on strike tosses in the middle, inside, and outside... up, down. Toss in a few balls too so the player can work on learning the strike zone also. As you see a lot of work can be done in a short period of time.
If you toss from the side ,it is best to have net to target the balls.Youth Baseball Hitting

Free Hitting - Turn 'em loose. Pitch or use a pitching machine and let the youth baseball player work on improving his hitting with live pitches without a lot of coaching at this point. Let the player have fun and just hit away. The Tee drill and soft toss is to work on mechanics. Now Focus on the ball and Swing.

These tips and basic batting practice strategy will greatly help your players improve their hitting skills. As a parent you can quickly move your son to the meat of the batting order with these simple batting practice two or three times a week. As coaches we should try and implement some batting practice every practice. The best way is to divide them into groups..some work on tee..move to ..the soft toss..then free hitting and move on to shagging.

How To Choose A Great Baseball Bat

Perhaps the most important aspect of baseball is to have a bat that suits your needs. A bat's weight, length, and material can all have a positive or negative affect on a batter's swing. Consider every option when choosing a baseball bat for yourself.

Bats come in all shapes and sizes. Wooden bats are often popular with major leaguers, but some feel you get a better crack using a metal baseball bat. There are restrictions, however, on which bats can be used.

Every league has rules on what material a bat can be made from and the circumference of the bat's barrel. Do not become ejected from a game because you failed to pay attention to the rules. Ask the appropriate commissioner, umpire, or coach to give you the rules on weight and height ratios. Remember that corked bats are not allowed for anything other than practice in many leagues.

When shopping for a bat, read the packaging. It is becoming increasingly common for a bat to have print directly on it that states, "Approved for such and such a league." This can help you select a bat that will meet your needs and any restrictions.

Baseball bats can be as low as $20 and as high as $500. A pricey bat is not necessarily an excellent bat, just as an inexpensive bat does not mean that bat is inferior quality. The key to making any bat work for you is by practicing regularly. Nonetheless, you should find a bat that is appropriate to your strengths and weaknesses.

Today's bats are advanced. The thin walls, wood choices, and formation can create the perfect environment for a ball to go flying. These same bats are also far more susceptible to dents and fractures; so increased technology is not necessarily the greatest option. Babe Ruth managed to hit numerous home runs without using today's streamlined bats.

Batting cages often have balls pitched harder and faster than in a normal baseball game. If you regularly practice in batting cages, consider a metal bat. They are able to withstand the test of time better than one of today's wooden bats.

Speaking of today's bats, some even have nitrogen or helium inside. A bat enhanced with these gasses allows more of a "trampoline effect", meaning the ball literally bounces off the bat at impact. This causes the ball to travel farther.

Visit stores and sample a variety of bats to find which baseball bat feels best to you. There is no tried or true formula for choosing a length. For this reason, it is far more beneficial to sample a number of bats until you find a bat that feels like an extension of your arm. The bat should allow you to swing freely without feeling like the weight of the baseball bat is knocking you off balance.

Never choose a bat that will last for a few years, especially for children. Any bat should fit for that immediate season, not be something a child grows into.

By following a few simple steps, you can find a bat that feels natural. As an extension of yourself, you are guaranteed to improve your swing!
