Baseball Softball
What do you think about taking baseball and softball out of the Olympics?

They took out baseball and softball for golf! Seriously, of all things golf! I say, if they wanted to take a sport out, take ping pong out! ping pong isn't a sport, it's a game. Sure, it's exciting to watch, but as a sport, I don't think so. So what do you think about it? Is it just me and my family that feels this way, or is it everyone?

I AGREE WITH YOU BERT
golf is not a sport it doesn't require any athletic ability. same with ping pong (although I still think ping pong is cool) it just doesn't require athletic ability.
BASEBALL AND SOFTBALL DESERVE TO BE IN THE OLYMPICS MORE THAN GOLF OR PING PONG!!!!!!!!!

Golf Tee Box Positioning Course Management

There is only one goal when it comes to the desired landing area off the tee box. We all like to land the ball in the middle of the fairway or as close to the pin as possible on the par threes, but sometimes this task seems difficult to accomplish. Playing for the middle of the fairway or green could make the golf hole a little longer than we would like on some golf holes. However, playing and positioning yourself in the right area of the tee box may help you shorten the golf hole and avoid certain hazards on the golf course.

Next time you step on to the tee box, look down the fairway and take all golf conditions and the sloping fairway into consideration before placing your tee and golf ball into the ground. Check to see if there is any crosswind and what direction it is heading. Also, check to see which direction the fairway or green is sloping. When both are heading in the same direction, you may want to use a certain side of the tee box to your advantage, depending on which way you want the ball to maneuver. This sometimes can be confusing in choosing to aim left, right, or center of the tee box when thinking about your desired placement on the teeing area.

Stepping into the correct position on the tee box not only accounts on whether there is a crosswind and or a sloping fairway and green. You must determine on how high your odds are in hooking, fading or slicing the golf ball, unless you know how to hit the ball straight consistently. Also, is the golf hole straight away, dogleg right or left? You may have to determine the right golf club for distance, especially if the position on the tee box you choose will take you closer to the hazards that golfers seem to forget about or overlook. Teeing areas are not always level. Is the position you choose on the tee box going to place the golf ball higher or lower in your stance? When the golf ball is higher or lower in your stance, it could change the direction you want to aim with not much choice on your part. A golf ball higher in your stance will tend to go left and right if the ball is lower in you stance for right handed hitters.

A good example of positioning yourself in the correct position on the tee box would be a sand trap or a water hazard to the right of you. You may want to choose the right side of the tee box and aim left, if there were a smaller or no hazard in this direction. Just keep in mind, a hazard is a hazard and it is a matter of which hazard will not bring other hazards into play, if you end up in one or the other! Staying away from water on the right and ending up in a sand trap to the left could be a nightmare for some, especially if you have to hit the golf ball back towards the water when the pin is located in this direction.

This may all seem a little confusing to say the least, but with careful thought before teeing up the golf ball, will make a big difference on your next golf shot to the green or pin. Choosing the correct position on the tee box is your only chance in taking advantage of playing the ball with your preferred lie. It is all part of golf course management which will lower your golf handicap and demand self golf discipline, which in turn makes better golf players.

Tee Ball

One of the key success factors of better golf psychology is learning to unconsciously play one shot at a time - in the moment, in the zone or "in the now." And this applies equally to every shot you play on the practice ground, in a friendly game and in the most important round of your golfing life. Playing in the now means that you're protected from any poor, indifferent shots and ill-judged shots that went before. It also means that you're protected from future uncertainties and expectation.

Now why am I talking about this today? Well, isn't the world's golf press just amazing, if a little predictable? They see Benn Barham score a fourth round 69 for a phenomenal total of 19 under par and they say he failed and focus their attention on his few bad shots, like his drive down the last hole "that cost him a birdie." If he'd played like that, scored like that and won, then they'd be talking about his amazing success and knocking Rafael Cabrera Bello's disastrous failure.

Now I'm not taking anything away from Rafael. He played remarkably well for an 11-under par 60 to beat Benn into second place in the Austrian Open on the European Tour by a single shot. I read somewhere that it's one of only 13 rounds of 60 in the history of the European Tour and Darren Clarke had two of those, so Rafael's one of only 12 phenomenal golfers.

What's more interesting to me as a golf psychologist watching every shot of their final rounds is that they both played to the best of their ability on the day. It was just that Rafael scored better. Better even than Benn's 63 in the opening round on Thursday. What's also interesting is that they both seemed to be playing their mental golf one shot at a time.

You could see that in the way that Benn calmly holed a series of difficult recovery putts to keep things going in the first 9 holes on Sunday. Except he didn't seem to be "trying" to keep things going, he just seemed to be playing each shot on its merits, disregarding the shot that had gone before, good or bad. He also didn't look like a man who was getting ahead of himself. He just seemed to be focussing on playing the shots and letting the score just happen. Even the final result didn't really faze him judging by his comment afterwards that "I'm very happy with the way I have played but disappointed to finish second."

Rafael certainly looked to me like he was doing the same thing and he confirmed it afterwards when he's quoted as saying.

"It's just amazing - I played the best golf of my life and I can't believe it, I was so far back at the start of the final round that I wasn't thinking about winning. I just tried to play a shot at a time and it worked out really good."

So how do I play each shot "in the now", I hear you asking. Well, I'll be talking a lot more about that in future articles, but for now, here's a simple suggestion that will bring most people abruptly into the now. Just imagine that the shot you are about to play is the last golf shot you will ever play. There's no point in thinking about the next shot, as there isn't going to be one. Just make the best you can of this one last shot. Make it a shot to remember. You wouldn't want to mess up your last ever shot by trying too hard, now would you.

Friction for Children: 4 Tricks to Help Children Understand Friction

If you’re looking for ways to aid in teaching friction for children then keep reading. So your child comes home from school with questions about friction.  How can you help your child understand this concept?  Without friction life as we know it would not exist.  Every surface would be more slippery than ice.  You could not walk, run, write, or even feed yourself without friction.  Friction for children is as easy as using common examples to guide your explanation.

Friction for children starts with the basics. Friction is a push, pull, or a force which works against the motion of objects that are in contact as they move past each other.  When objects are touching their surfaces tend to stick together, like the tiny loops and hooks of Velcro.  Heat and sound are also produced by friction.  If you rub the palms of your hands together quickly your hands get warm and you can hear the sound that friction creates.

There are three types of friction; sliding friction, rolling friction, and fluid friction.  Sliding friction is caused by two objects touching each other that slide past one another.  For example, when you push a large wooden crate across a floor you push against sliding friction.  The entire surface of the crate that is in contact with the floor slides against the floor, slowing down the motion of the crate.  Rolling friction uses wheels.  If you move the identical large wooden crate with a wagon then you exert a force against rolling friction.  Only the bottom of each wheel is in contact with the floor. Rolling friction is less than sliding friction; it takes less effort to push the crate on the wagon than to push the crate that is directly resting on the floor.  When an object is in contact with a fluid, a liquid or a gas this is considered fluid friction.  Airplanes and race cars are streamlined to reduce fluid friction.  They have smooth, curved surfaces to reduce the friction, called drag, with the air.

When teaching friction for children it’s important to stress how friction can be advantageous.  You light a match using friction.  As you strike a match, friction creates enough heat to ignite a chemical compound in the match head that then burns the rest of the match head.  Automobile brakes work because of friction.  As the brake pads rub against the car’s wheels, the car slows down.  Shoes designed for some sports have special soles to use friction to your advantage.  Baseball shoes and football shoes have cleats to increase friction by sticking to cracks in the ground.  A violinist puts rosin on his bow to increase friction between the bow and the violin strings, therefore producing sound.

However, friction can also be disadvantageous.  If a door hinge squeaks, the noise is caused by friction.  The space shuttle’s nose and wings heat up dramatically as it returns to Earth from orbit.  The ceramic tiles on the shuttle’s nose and wings are designed to dissipate this heat caused by friction. The moving parts of a car’s engine rub against each other and can stick together, causing the engine to seize and to stop working.  Using oil in a car’s engine protects the parts from friction.  Cooked foods tend to stick to pans.  Teflon on non-stick cookware reduces friction between the food and the pan, causing the food to slide.  Competitive swimmers wear specially designed racing suits to reduce the friction between themselves and the water so that they can swim faster.  A bowler wears extremely flat-soled shoes to slide on the lane right before he releases the bowling ball.  Silicone aerosols, oils, grease, graphite (the very soft form of carbon in “lead” pencils), and ball bearings are all used to reduce friction.

By using every day examples, you can teach friction for children and help them better understand this concept.  The three types of friction, sliding, rolling and fluid, can either be beneficial or detrimental to the motion of objects.  Friction between your pen or pencil tip and the paper you write on allows you to write on the paper.  Friction between the ground or the floor and your feet allows you to run or walk along these surfaces.  Friction between your food and a spoon or fork allows you to eat with these utensils.
