Youth Baseball Bats: How To Choose The Right One

So your child plays baseball and you want him or her to have the best baseball gear like youth baseball bats. Of course you need to make sure that he or she has the appropriate baseball equipment so they can play at their best. Since the primary equipment that your child should have is a baseball bat, it is important to choose the right one. When choosing youth baseball bats, it is essential to consider the length, weight, width and league requirements. These factors are the key to choosing the perfect baseball bat that will fit your child’s playing ability. Though there are a whole lot of choices in the market, today, finding the right one can be very beneficial.

It is recommended to choose baseball bats that are the lightest for their length but you also need to make sure that this is not an issue with the league your child is playing in. Some leagues require that this should not be more than minus 10. For example, if the bat is 29 inches in length it cannot weigh less than 19 ounces. Choosing the right weight to length will make sure that your child gets maximum swing speed. However, light youth baseball bats cost more than heavier baseball bats that are often made from thicker and cheaper-grade aluminum or wood. While wood baseball bats are available and are also inexpensive, aluminum or cutting-edge alloy youth baseball bats are a better choice because of their lighter weight and they are a lot less likely to crack.

Another factor that should be considered is the length. It is important to understand that the longer the bat, the more plate coverage your child will have. However, longer bats are usually heavier. It is important that when choosing the right length to make sure that your child can reach the outside of the plate. If they crowd the plate too much they have a higher chance of getting hit with the pitch. This can cause them to be scared of the ball and start backing out before the pitch reaches the plate. Aside from the length, another thing that needs to be considered is the youth baseball bats barrel size. Baseball is a game of inches. The bigger the barrel the better. Bigger barrels allow your child to get more bat on the ball. Note that most youth baseball leagues require that the bat should be no more than 2 and 5/8 inches in diameter.

Choosing youth baseball bats can be a hard job and if you don’t know what you are looking for, you might not choose the best youth baseball bat for your child. Shopping can be a real headache because you usually cannot try out the bat before you buy it. Most sporting goods stores will not have batting cages inside of them. It’s a good thing to have your child try another child’s bat out to find the right length to weight ratio before you buy if possible.

For you to have the right picture of what youth baseball bats are right for your child, you can look for professional help online by simply browsing the internet
for detailed information on the bat you are thinking about purchasing.

The Latest Trend in Adult League Baseball Bats

Since baseball is the great American pastime, almost every kid longed to be part of it. The Adult leagues baseball bats are very popular and have been around for a long time. They are available in a wide variety of lengths, widths and materials. The weight of these sports gears usually depend in their material and length. Though the heavier one gives more momentum to the ball, they provide less speedy swing. Thereby, many people prefer those made of aluminum or as they can hit the ball farther than their wooden counterparts.

These sports accessories made from aluminum were first introduced in the market in the 1970s. They are one of the most popular Adult leagues baseball bats that can conveniently increase your batting averages and double your home run hits. However, it is mandatory for the professionals to use the wooden bats.

In case you are planning to purchase a baseball bat it is better to consider the height and weight of the person who will be using it. The league requirements are also equally important. In fact, the Adult leagues too have strict rules regarding their baseball bats. The speed and control of these sports gears are also crucial factors while considering a particular brand. You should also check the grip of the bat; make sure that your fingertips meet as you close your hand around the handle. The price is also a significant deciding factor. The wooden ones are usually cheaper; however those made from aluminum are more expensive. Unlike the wooden ones, the aluminum bats will not peel or chip. As a result, its weight and balance will also remain constant.

There are thousands of Adult leagues baseball bats available in the market. You can even buy these sports accessories online. However, it is better to talk to an expert and ask their opinion about which bat will suit you the best before actually buying one.

The following are some common Adult league baseball bats:

Louisville Slugger H2 Hybrid -3 CB9H2:

This is a composite bat which is particularly designed for the high school and the college teams. They feature ST+20 barrel and a full 3X composite handle. In fact, the graphite composite transition zone can create a stiffer handle that produces maximum trampoline effect and more barrel flexibility.

Anderson NanoTek XS:

This bat can actually improve your game through its superior design. Its single wall-standard construction can provide great overall playability. This bat comes with taper flex technology, with the help of which the vibration is spread over the bat.

Quality matters when selecting a baseball glove

If you play baseball, you truly know how valuable a baseball glove is, and more for just its quality. There are many good baseball gloves out there made by various companies, such as Rawlings (my favourite, and viewed by many, as the best), Wilson and Reebok (just to name a few).

A good glove can make the world of difference: yes, if you are talented at baseball no matter what glove you use, you'll still be good, and vice versa. However, quality does help, and that is why picking the right glove for you is important.

The right size and feel, along with the position you play, is very important when deciding to purchase a glove. For instance, there are bat catcher gloves, first baseman gloves, infield and outfield gloves. Hopefully you'll know what position you are playing and when you do, and you have factored in all of the criteria I have mentioned, it's time to pick out the right one.

In addition to the size and feel the company you select also matters since quality is directly linked to  a company’s product. Going with unrecognized or generic brand is usually not a very wise choice.

You will probably have these baseball gloves for a long time, and it is amazing how attached you'll get to it. I know that it sounds strange, but after awhile, you won't want to play without it (I know that this is the case for me). It sounds strange, but it almost becomes a part of you.

Baseball And Your Feet

Take me out to the ballgame

For over one hundred and fifty years, Americans have been devoted to the game of baseball as both fans and participants. With the arrival of each spring, thousands of people across the country search for their gloves and cleats in preparation for the upcoming baseball and softball season. Spring also brings an influx of patients to the local emergency rooms and doctor's offices because of the injuries associated with our national pastime. Before you ever step up to the plate, take the time to ensure that you are actually ready to run the bases.

Coming off the bench (or couch)

Baseball and softball seem pretty safe compared to other "contact" sports. But far too often, a lack of preparation and self awareness is what leads to a sports injury.

As with any physical activity, make sure that you are fit to play long before the first game. A person over 40, smokers, diabetics or anyone who has a physical disability should see a physician before starting any type of vigorous exercise. Those who have existing foot problems should see a podiatrist who can offer you a gait analysis and advise you on the inherent risks associated with your activity.

Before you take the field, did you inspect the field? Always do a walk through of the playing surface before you dive head first after that shallow line drive. Rocks, broken glass and countless other potential hazards could be waiting for you in the grass. Are the bases secured? Are there any dips or holes in the infield or outfield? These things should be taken into consideration at all times.

Shoe essentials

The right equipment is essential to the enhanced performance and safety in any sport. Baseball and softball players rely on the traction of cleats to get them around the diamond.

Special consideration should be given to children under the age of 10 before fitting them with cleats. While bigger kids and adults produce a lot of energy and torque while churning the bases, smaller children might not need the extra grip that cleats provide. Regular sneakers may provide adequate traction while reducing the risk of ankle injuries sometimes caused by a biting cleat. If a child wants cleats, be sure that they wear them around in the yard a good deal before they play their first game so they can get used to the feel of them.

Cleats should be fitted with the help of an experienced footwear technician using the same socks that will be worn on game day. When wearing new cleats for the first time, pay close attention for signs of irritation like redness, swelling, blisters or discomfort anywhere within the foot and ankle area. If any of these symptoms become apparent, discontinue use for two or three days. If there are reoccurring issues, see a podiatrist to diagnose the problem.

Injuries and treatment of the lower extremities

* Shin splints occur when the muscle and tendon attached to the shin become inflamed due to stress fractures. Treat with cold compresses immediately after exercising. Proper stretching and strengthening exercises help prevent shin splints.
* Achilles Tendonits is the result of tightness in the calf and the subsequent aggravation of the Achilles tendon. Stretching the calf muscle properly before and after a game will minimize any discomfort.
* Plantar Fasciitis, commonly referred to as arch and heel pain, occurs when the fascia that runs along the bottom of the foot becomes inflamed. Heel spurs may also be present as a result of an inflamed fascia. A qualified podiatrist can evaluate your condition and will sometimes prescribe custom fitted shoe inserts to correct the situation. Proper stretching techniques go a long way to alleviate the pain associated with this ailment.

Summer fun isn't much fun when your feet hurt, so keep these tips in mind when you are out there on the diamond:

* Learn proper stretching techniques and do them regularly
* Check to be sure the playing surface is free of hazards
* Get accustomed to new cleats before actually playing in them
* Consult a podiatrist if your foot and ankle pain cannot be easily remedied
* Have fun!!

Different types of baseball gloves

Baseball is the great American sport. This game is played with bats, balls, and of course baseball gloves. I remember the leathery smell, the feel on my hand,  it felt to have the batted ball smack into the webbing of my glove or the pocket. It extended my reach, and advanced my skills when catching a ball.

People do not realize the different types of gloves which are available.

The first basemen’s glove, which is longer than the other gloves, is shaped like a flipper with only a thumb pocket and then a four fingered pocket.

The catcher’s mitt, used exclusively to catch the ball thrown by the pitcher, is oval in shape and heavily padded. With a hard throwing pitcher, you can hear the ball popping into the mitt.

Last, but not least, the infielder’s and out fielder’s gloves. Shaped like your hand, with five fingers, like the hand of the incredible Hulk. While you race with your arm extended outward, the glove lets you reach further than you normally can.

Each type of glove, takes on the personality of its owner. While you have several different types of manufactures’ gloves available, the glove does not become yours simply because you wear it. It becomes yours when it reaches the point it is broken in. Soft and flexible, a real baseball glove reflects your personality.

Baseball gloves take time to be broken in and achieve that total feel of comfort, just like a comfortable chair or shoes. The easy part is breaking in to the glove but the hard and challenging part starts after you get used to the glove and are onfield.

Youth Baseball Conditioning

There are many valuable youth baseball conditioning techniques to increase your players’ abilities by maximizing their strength, range of motion, and flexibility. Just as a car can only travel as fast as its engine will allow, in like manner, baseball players can only perform to the degree that their bodies will allow. If coaches, parents and mentors ensure that their players are involved in recommended youth baseball conditioning training, they will be increasing their players’ chances to fulfil their maximum potential.

Here are some advised youth baseball conditioning techniques that are recommended for youth baseball coaches for the development of their players:

  • Pitching Better through Swimming - Swimming can actually strengthen the shoulder muscles and enable pitchers to throw the baseball harder while protecting pitchers from devastating shoulder injuries. It is recommended that pitchers swim in free style for two minutes with a series of 4 repetitions. If the player can not swim, then the pitcher can stand waist deep in water under adult supervision and push the water away from the body with a hard thrust and fingers spread apart. This should be repeated for 2 minutes at a time.

  • Sprint to Success - One of the traditional youth baseball training programs remains the best. Players need to build up their endurance in order to play the entire game with strength and energy. Wind sprints are the best way for youth baseball players to build up their endurance and, at the same time, bond with their teammates. If your players run wind sprints as a team or in bunches, such as pitchers, catchers, infielders and outfielders, you will be building up their endurance and the team will become closer as a unit. Ten 60 yard sprints are a good way to start, and you can lengthen the distance and repetitions over time.

  • Squeeze that Ball - Another simple youth baseball conditioning exercise can be done everywhere from the ball field to the schoolyard and even to bed. Baseball players can increase their wrist strength by squeezing a rubber Spalding ball. Yes, these pink balls are still of infinite value to baseball players – pitchers, to increase the speed of their pitch; hitters by increasing their bat speed and, therefore, the distance of their drives; and fielders by increasing the strength of their throws.

  • Stretch Before Games – Stretching and warm-ups are a key element of baseball conditioning training protocols to prevent injuries. Prior to every game and practice, baseball coaches should lead their team in a regular series of stretching and warm-up exercises for at least 10-12 minutes. Before the players begin playing baseball, make sure to cover all major muscle groups including shoulders, legs, arms, hips, and back.

Of course these are just a few, simple youth baseball conditioning exercises among many. Baseball coaches should be familiar with a wide variety of exercises and should weave these into a more holistic conditioning training plan that is appropriate to the age of their players.

Combined with a variety of baseball drills that make the game fun and build the fundamental skills needed to play, a strong baseball conditioning training regimen will ensure that players reach the top of their game and avoid unnecessary injury.

Ssk Baseball Gloves
What are the rules on baseball gloves in high school?

Am I allowed to use a black glove with white lacing as a pitcher in high school?

I am looking at getting a custom SSK and don't want to spend three hundred dollars only to find out that I am not allowed to use it.

NFHS Rule 1-3-6...Gloves/mitts made of leather shall be worn by all fielders and not be altered to create an adhesive, sticky and/or tacky surface. The glove/mitt worn by the catcher may be any size. The glove/mitt worn by the pitcher that includes the colors white or gray shall be removed from the game upon discovery by either team and/or the umpire. The glove/mitt worn by all fielders except the catcher shall conform to the following maximum specifications:
a. Height (measured from the bottom edge or heel straight up across the center of the palm to a line even with the highest point of the glove/mitt): 14 inches.
b. Width of palm (measured from the bottom edge of the webbing farthest from the thumb in a horizontal line to the outside of the little finger edge of the glove/mitt); 8 inches.
c. Webbing (measured across the top end or along any line parallel to the top): 5 3/4 inches.

So the answer is no. If you can black out the lacing with shoe polish, or a permanent marker, you could use it.

Better Youth Baseball Gloves

A good ball glove can have a big effect on youth's enjoyment of playing baseball and even about whether baseball is a worthwhile sport for them to participate in. Kids could be playing many other sports, and in fact, participation in basketball and soccer is growing fast in the US. There's no better summer sport or pastime than baseball though. It has a rich American tradition that other sports don't possess and that's an important part of your own child's sports experience.

Baseball is a game that is dependent on equipment though, and if the equipment is poor quality or in doesn't suit the kids using them, it can dampen their enthusiasm for little league baseball. It's important to buy youth baseball gloves for your child, not small adult baseball gloves which will discourage your youngster.

They had poor equipment back in the old days, including rotted out or horribly stiff leather gloves. Some would actually throw the glove down and try to catch with their bare hands. It may not be that bad today, but in visiting your local sporting goods store, you've probably wondered about the quality of the gloves on the store shelves. Some are weird shapes and feel uncomfortable and the selection is many times limited.

The Good Old Days

Have you ever wondered whether baseball glove manufacturers are producing better ball gloves now than in decades past? Well, if you happen to have an old baseball glove still around and compare it to modern youth baseball gloves, you'll notice a big difference. Those old gloves didn't make catching and fielding easy for infielders, outfielders and especially catchers. You actually had to have some outstanding athletic skills and knowledge of catching to make a catch. In those days, you used both hands to catch a ball because you had to.

That's not to say these new gloves are suited to the ball player that's using them. These kids range in physical size greatly, and play different positions. The child that has a new, well-fitted glove is going to catch the ball better and play with a lot more confidence.

Young ball players with their metal bats are hitting the ball hard, so infielders and outfielders need good gloves just to catch them, let alone throw the runner out at first. We shouldn't just assume that any glove would do for our child. Each youngster has their own level of coordination and confidence, along with their own style and preferences, and fortunately, there are so many types and styles of gloves available now, that you should be able to find one they like. You don't see kids get hurt often but it does happen and it will happen more often with the child that feels uncomfortable with the baseball equipment they're using.

Bad Bounces

Last week, while watching a youth baseball game (11 year olds) a batter hit a ball hard up the middle, fortunately missing the pitcher. The ball hit the side of the mound and bounced up to hit the base umpire in the shoulder. She was hurt and lay on the ground several minutes before getting up. That highlighted well, the speed the balls are reaching and that the young infielder playing with awkward baseball glove is going to playing with fear. Yes, some fear is good, as it keeps them sharp and makes the game exciting, but too much fear and they're going to get discouraged.

Many of the kids on these teams have gloves that are too small, and overwhelmingly, you see their reluctance to catch well-hit grounders. They generally wave at it going by them and sigh in relief that it wasn't hit right at them. One youngster in the outfield ran to make a diving catch only to have the ball pop out of his glove. They used to see that if your glove touched a ball, you should have caught it and it is an error for you. When a ball is in your glove, it should stay in there. In this kid's case, the ball was clearly in his glove and yet it popped out. The reason for that is that the glove didn't fit his hand and the web wouldn't close tightly.

He walked dejectedly back to centerfield, his position, and cursed at himself for dropping it. It was like a scene out of a Charlie Brown episode. If he'd hung onto that ball, he would have been walking on clouds and be the pride of the team. I don't have to tell you how important peer pressure is with kids these days and when kids never catch the ball, it can deflate the team and even the crowd of parents watching the game. Sometimes, it's downright torture to watch a ball game if the kids can't catch or throw properly.

Young pitchers too, can have trouble throwing strikes, and after walking batter after batter, you can sense disappointment. The glove on the pitcher's hand acts as a counterbalance when throwing and if it doesn't feel comfortable for him, you may be in for a long inning.

A fair number of kids come from homes that can't afford a new glove every year and they may not be able to afford baseball shoes. If there's one piece of equipment you need to focus on for youth baseball players, it has to be the glove. Your child is out there standing for half of the game, with this glove on their hand. If it's uncomfortable, and doesn't fit, that has to take some of the enjoyment out of it.

There's a mind-boggling array of youth baseball brands out there to choose from Rawling, Mizuno, Wilson, Spalding, Rawlings, Nokona, Akadema, Kelly, Nike, Louisville, SSK and more. The problem with many of these big brand names is not only the inflated prices associated with these brands, it's the weight and stiffness of the gloves. The materials and the stitching are sewn well enough. They aren't designed with kids in mind who after all, don't have time to break the glove in. Within one year, they will have likely outgrown the glove, so what's the point of buying a glove like that? The glove ends up unused in a closet or on the garage floor becoming a nuisance object.

History of use of baseball glove

A baseball glove or mitt is a large leather glove that baseball players on the defending team are allowed to wear to assist them in catching and fielding balls hit by a batter, or thrown by a teammate.

Early baseball was a game played without gloves. During the slow transition to gloves, a player who continued to play without one was called a barehanded catcher. This did not refer to the position of Catcher, but rather to the practice of catching with bare hands. The earliest glove was not webbed and not particularly well suited for catching, but was used more to bat a ball to the ground so that it could be picked up. No doubt this lack of functionality contributed to the early resistance to the glove.

One of the first players believed to use a baseball glove was Doug Allison, a catcher for the Cincinnati Red Stockings, in 1870, due to an injured left hand.[1] The first documented story of glove use concerns Charles Waitt, a St. Louis outfielder/first baseman who in 1875 donned a pair of flesh-colored gloves. While glove usage was not accepted by all players at first, being considered "sissy" by many, it slowly caught on as more and more players began using different forms of gloves. "We used no mattress on our hands, No cage upon our face; We stood right up and caught the ball, With courage and with grace."[2] That was the typical reaction from the "old-time" players when the gloves were first introduced.

Many early baseball gloves were simple leather gloves with the fingertips cut off, supposedly to allow for the same control of a bare hand, but with extra padding. The adoption of the baseball glove by baseball star Albert Spalding when he began playing first base influenced more infielders to begin using gloves. By the mid 1890s, it was the norm for players to wear gloves in the field.

It was an ironic fate for Spalding, as he once was skeptical to don the new glove in baseball, but then rose to the occasion and did it. He afterwards created the sporting goods empire known as Spalding Since their beginnings, baseball gloves have grown. While catching in baseball had always been two handed, eventually, gloves grew to a size that made it easier to catch the ball in the webbing of the glove, and use the off-hand to keep it from falling out.

A glove is typically worn on the non-dominant hand, leaving the dominant hand for throwing the ball; for example, a right-handed player would wear a glove on the left hand. By convention, the type of glove that fits on the left hand is called a "right-handed" or "RH" glove. The shape and size of the baseball gloves is governed by official baseball rules; Section 1.00, Objectives of the Game, defines limits of catcher's, first baseman's and fielder's glove in parts 1.12, 1.13 and 1.14.
