Can you expect all star rating in Spain to be the same?

The short answer is definitely NO. Each of the seventeen regions in Spain give official ratings according their own criteria therefore making it impossible to make an informed choice ( based just on the classification alone ) when deciding where to stay. The only common factor of all regions is that they rate hotels as one, two, three, four or five star according to facilities offered.

In general five star hotels will usually live up to customers expectations as these are the luxury end of the market and are mostly offered by international or national hotel chains who have a quality brand image to live up to. Being the high end market they are of course only for those who can afford them a customer base with high expectations.

Four and three star hotels in Spain tend to be the establishments with the most disappointment when it comes to customers expectations as these vary greatly from region to region and town to town. It is not unusual to find a three star which customers review as a four star and indeed a four star which customers review as a three.

To add to the confusion the official rating given to a hotel is not necessarily that which customers see, as most hotels are booked online or through tour company brochures who have their own star ratings criteria ( or sun, crown, key, moon, diamond etc ). It is also widespread for customers to have their own idea of what a classification actually means based on the services and comfort of hotels in their own country. In Spain the service and especially the type of food offered differs from that of other European destinations and or course is “ typically Spanish “ as you would expect.

A rough guide of what to expect for each star rating.

1 Star – Basic rooms some with a bathroom or shared facilities. Often no amenities such as lounge, swimming pool, television, room telephone, safe or reception services. Generally small rooms most without balconies or sea views. Although basic this can be a good option if on a budget holiday. You may be pleasantly surprised in this type of hotel if you ask to see your room before payment. Expect dining to be simple Spanish meals with limited choice sometimes only on a bed and breakfast rate or room only. Limited fire safety standards.

2 Star – Basic comfortable acceptable accommodation with some rooms en-suite. Many will offer better services and even perhaps a small swimming pool. Rooms may have a television, air conditioning, bigger restaurant, better style of food with perhaps more choice usually on a buffet basis. Many two star hotels in good sea front locations are unable to gain a 3 star due to restraints with the building but do offer a 3 star service with good quality but smaller rooms. Limited fire safety standards but most do have fire escapes now.

3 Star – Here you will get a larger hotel with better facilities such as T.V games room, pool and gardens or sun terrace, 24 hour reception, lounge, separate bar. Generally with larger restaurant with a comprehensive choice food served buffet style for breakfast through to dinner. Rooms will all be en-suite usually with full bathroom facilities, TV, room safe, balcony, air conditioning, telephone and large enough to accommodate twin beds. Most do not offer room service. Many three star hotels do now offer limited gym facilities. Better fire escape standards and better equipment such as hoses extinguishers can be expected.

4 Star – Large formal hotels with well deigned ambient decor to public areas. Usually offer a choice of bars and large restaurant with buffet service plus a´la carte dining choice in many. Most offer outdoor and indoor heated pool with gym, sauna facilities too. Rooms are well appointed with balcony or terrace (unless city center based). All will provide air conditioning, room service, large bathrooms with hairdryer and toiletries plus luxury towels. Many have a mini bar or fridge but not all. Expect satellite T.V with a good range of channels and an in room telephone. Concierge service to book theatres, car hire etc does tend to be available in most 4 star hotels. Most are now up to the EU fire safety standards.

5 Star – These are the best offering a high level of personal service, luxury and high end premises with landscaped gardens ( unless city center based). You will expect luxury rooms with mini bar, trouser press, fine quality furnishings and specially designed luxurious beds and bed linen. Bathrooms will be of the highest quality and large with luxury toiletries and towels. World T.V and pay per view films / games available. 24 hour full room service. A selection of bars and dining areas with award wining food. Usually have a golf course on site or nearby and full spa / wellness centers. Expect a bell boy service and full 24 hour concierge. All will have good fire safety and evacuation procedures in place.

Hostal & Pension Accommodation

For the budget traveller you may also consider a Spanish one or two star hostal or simple pension. These are often the cheapest with two star hostals offering the best with en-suite shower rooms. Many have small restaurants or bars which serve food. Most are bed and breakfast only and offer very limited services with no pools or garden areas.

Pensions tend to very basic with some en-suite shower rooms or shared facilities. Most pensions do not offer food but some may offer bar snacks or a small continental breakfast. With these you do get what you pay for so do not expect too much other than clean accommodation. Best suited to back packers or those who just need somewhere to sleep in between all night partying. Best advice is too ask to see the room first before deciding to stay.

Many of these older establishments do not offer a high standard of fire safety when compared to many countries. Not many have separate fire escapes a point worth considering.

Concerning food, service, expectations, safety

Generally hotels in Spain below three star will offer limited “international” food, which, if not important can be a good thing depending on your taste and willingness to experiment. If however you want food “like it is at home” then you would be best to go three or four star with four being the best choice for good quality international food. The thing to remember is that Spain is Spain and you should be prepared to immerse yourself into the way things are rather than come with expectations of a home from home. This way you will enjoy a much more pleasant stay. If you are concerned about safety Spain does have an excellent record of fire safety and is a very safe place to be with violent crime extremely rare. The plumbing is different, water tastes different but is safe, things are slower, service is – well - Spanish and tomorrow is another day. Enjoy your visit to Spain and the large choice of hotels.

Feng Shui â?? a Few Good Stars

In Chinese Metaphysics, there are many types of systems and formulas. One of them is known as Flying Stars systems of Feng Shui. In this system, there are nine types of stars which are given numeral of 1 - 9. These stars are actually bodies of energy (also known as Qi) that moves within a property. In Feng Shui, a property is divided into nine equal sectors based on compass direction of North, South, East, West, Northeast, Southeast, Northwest and Southwest. The sector without any compass direction is the center. The distribution of Qi over these sectors demarcates the good and bad sectors therein and formed an energy pattern within a property. The energy pattern in a property will change from month to month and year to year as the stars fly from one sector to the other.

 

In Flying Stars Feng Shui, a property belonged to a period of time based on its facing direction.  There are altogether nine periods and each period has 20 years based on the Chinese Solar Calendar. We are currently in period 8 which started in February 2004 and will last until February 2023. In each period, the nine flying stars are categorizes into good and bad stars. The good stars are deemed timely and will bring prosperity to residents of a property whereas the bad ones are considered untimely and become portents of misfortune. For this period, the few good stars are 8, 9 and 1. Star 8 is the current prosperity star whereas star 9 and 1 are future and distant prosperity stars respectively.

 

Star 8 is considered very auspicious as it is the ruling star of the period. It brings wealth, financial success, career advancement and prosperity to the residents when it flies into a given sector of a property. For example, star 8 occupies the East sector in the year 2008. A house with the main entrance in the East sector or a room in the East sector will be able to tap into the positive energy of this star and the residents will enjoy good luck in their endeavors. 

 

Star 9 is deemed auspicious as it is the ruling star for the next period which will start from Feb 2023 onwards. This star brings future prosperity to the residents. In year 2008, this star flies into the Southeast sector of a property. A door or room where this star is located will allow the residents therein to enjoy good luck such as long term investments, promotion and business opportunities.

 

Star 1 is also auspicious as it is the distant ruling star and belonged to period 1 which will start from Feb 2043 onwards. This star brings wisdom, academic luck, recognition and fame.  In year 2008, this star flies into the center of a property. A door or room with this star residing in it will be bring scholarly luck for students or those in the literary, artistic or creative fields.

 

The other useable stars are star 6 and 4. Both stars are deemed to be untimely but nevertheless have their positive qualities when combined with favorable stars of the current period. Star 6 is suitable for power and status whereas star 4 can be used for romance and academic pursuits. Star 6 and star 4 resides in the North and Northeast respectively in year 2008.

Workhorse Batting

My batting gloves have something in them that hurts my left hand thumb?

i have the rawlings workhorse 1050T and inside in between my pointer finger and my thumb there is a little ball like a knot that bothers me when i swing, if i cut it im pretty sure the glove will fall apart. I tried rubbing some cocoa butter on it to soften it up maybe it will but idk what to do because these are really great gloves otherwise.

i know same happened to me[different gloves] i bought new ones

2006 Philadelphia Phillies Preview

The Philadelphia Phillies remained right on the Braves heels for most of the 2005 season thanks to a potent batting order that included 2nd basemen Chase Utley (.291 28 105), and outfielder's Pat Burrell (.281 32 117) and Bobby Abreu (.286 24 102). Shortstop Jimmy Rollins (.290 12 54) and veteran catcher Mike Lieberthal (.263 12 47) also contributed to provide the Phillies with a well-balanced lineup. Perhaps the biggest offensive surprise was the emergence of rookie 1st baseman Ryan Howard (.288 22 63) who stepped in to replace the inured power hitting Jim Thome. Howard hit an impressive .298 mark after the all star break, launching 19 homeruns while playing in 67 games. His .323 batting average against righties helped keep the Phillies close and landed Howard National League Rookie of the Year. The Phillies ended the 2005 season with a respectable 88-74 record, finishing 2 games behind the Eastern Division leading Atlanta Braves. Philadelphia finished second in the National League with a team batting average of .270 (eighth in MLB).

The Phillies 2005 pitching was led by newly acquired Jon Lieber (17-13 4.20) who was picked up from the Yankees in the 2004 off season. Lieber posted only an 8-8 record prior to the all star break but rebounded nicely with a 9-5 record in the second half of the season and a 3.28 ERA. Joining Lieber in the rotation were starters Brett Myers (13-8 3.72), Randy Wolf (6-4 4.39), Vicente Padilla (9-12 4.71 and rookie pitcher Robinson Tejeda (4-3 3.57). Workhorse closer Billy Wagner (4-3 1.51 38 saves in 41 save opportunities) appeared in 75 games posting a microscopic 0.74 ERA in 36.1 innings pitched after the all star break.

Off Season Moves:

The Phillies acquired veteran reliever Arthur Rhodes (3-1 2.08) from the Indians for outfielder Jason Michaels to help their 2006 bullpen. Philadelphia also moved often injured 1st baseman Jim Thome (.207 7 30 RBI in 59 games) to make room for rookie sensation Ryan Howard. Aaron Rowand (.270 13 69) was picked up from the White Sox in the trade for Thome. Vicente Padilla was also moved for relief pitcher Ricardo Rodriguez (2-3 5.53) while starters Ryan Franklin (8-15 5.10) and journeyman reliever Tom Gordon (5-4 2.57) were acquired via free agency.

2006 Analysis:

The Phillies will enter the 2006 season with a potent lineup. Picking up Rowand in exchange for Thome will add to an already stacked batting order. Rowand is slated to replace free agent outfielder Kenny Lofton in centerfield. The Phillies will also be looking to build on Chase Utley and Ryan Howard's breakout seasons. Abreu was included in the trade rumor mill all off-season but it appears he will be staying in Philadelphia. Abreu is a steady often-underrated competitor, playing in all 162 games last year. Expect the offense to be even better in 2006 with Howard playing a full season.

The Phillies are most concerned about their pitching. The team lost free agent closer Billy Wagner to the Mets, and reliever Terry Adams to Pittsburgh. Vincente Padilla was also traded to Texas and it appears Urbina may not be pitching at all in 2006. Lieber, Lidle and Myers should continue their 2005 form in 2006 although the 4th and 5th starters are very weak. Reliever Tom Gordon has some very big shoes to fill with the departure of Wagner. Gordon hasn't managed to hold down the closer role since 2001 with the Chicago Cubs. Expect the Phillies lineup to dominate the NL and the top 3 pitchers to do well. The bullpen is shaky, but Philadelphia should contend for the East with a strong offensive attack.
