SOFTBALL RULES III

According to ASA softball rules, metal cleats are considered illegal and all those shoes termed as unsafe by Intramural Sport Supervisor. To start the game, a toss of a coin is made to decide which side should be at the home-plate first and at end point, if a game is stopped because of reasons well known, the game will be continued from stoop point. Seven innings lead to game point unless with time specifications. In game play, a catcher that obstructs the umpire’s view leads to a ball. For a score to be legal, the batter must hit the home-plate or if the base-runner lands home safely. In the recent past, a bat test has been introduced into the softball rules. This is done by subjecting the bat to compression tests, and any bat found to be non-compliant is withdrawn as the team is subjected to championship irregularities. The batter always will have to follow the same order through the game. A batter is out if a flying ball is caught before it lands on the ground, a call of three strikes has been made or if the batter is not standing in the batter’s area.

A base-runner will have to touch each base in order to make a complete run, and one runner must not over take the runner who is in front of him. Stealing is prohibited. If the runners are tagged with the ball before reaching the base or if the ball gets to the first base before the runner does then the runner is out.

Softball Glove

What softball glove should I get, and what should I do to break it in?

Hi !

I play JV softball for my high school and I'm on a club team -- it's extremely competitive.
I've been using my current glove for about 5 years, and it's completely worn down and just flimsy. It's getting to the point where I can't field a ground ball because the glove is so old!

I'm a pitcher for my high school team, and a first baseman for my club team.

Does anybody have any recommendations as to what glove I should get?

Thanks so much! :D

i always get the mizuno gloves. I like the design and the comfort of the glove. To break in a glove some people put their glove in the oven for 15 minutes. But the best way to break in a glove is to play a lot of catch everyday

Softball Equipment is Very Expensive!

For those of you that have a Daughter in ASA Fastpitch Softball you know that the right softball equipment can be very expensive.

Then the first time you see your daughter tossing it into the truck or all over her room, you want to pull your hair out.  Well actually you want to do something else, but we won’t go there.

For the longest time we didn’t think too much about it until we started buying two hundred and three hundred dollar softball bats and expensive softball gloves. Not to mention softball sliding shorts and softball batting gloves.

Once they have played for a few years you also start collecting things like bug spray, chap stick, sun tan lotion, softball face shields, asa softball rule books, and on and on.

This last time we went to the South Dakota State High School Softball Tournament keeping track of her softball equipment even became a bigger concern.

Why?

Because we went from one field to another and to try and carry all her softball equipment individually would have been impossible, not to mention embarrassing.

The older she got the more important everything became.  Like I mentioned earlier the softball face shield. This is a great way to protect your daughters face if she plays infield or pitcher. Of course when she was younger the balls weren’t hit hard enough to matter, but now that she is playing third base and pitching they come screaming down the line in High School Softball.

We finally broke down and purchased a softball carrying bag that immediately became the most important part of all her softball equipment. We no longer were hunting for her equipment right before a game.

Yes this was a typical ritual that we went through prior to having a bag to carry her softball equipment. Her mother and I would ask her, let’s see, about a million times, if she had all her stuff together. Then we would get into the truck and all of a sudden she would scream out, where’s my batting gloves or sliding shorts.

The world would come to an end for a moment and then everyone would rush to find the item(s). Of course the whole time her mother and I would be telling her “Didn’t we ask you if you had all your stuff together?”  Shame on us, but now we don’t go through that any more.

Anyway, good luck and by the way if you haven’t already read in my blog my daughter’s team came in third as a sophomore team in the South Dakota State High School Softball Tournament. Did I say that she won defensive player of the year for her team. This is kind of a proud father speaking by the way if you didn’t notice.

See below for where you can go to keep track of my daughter’s quest to earn a College Scholarship by playing Softball.

Thank you and God Bless you!

Bat Rolling Becoming A Necessity With New Mph Rules

Anyone who has played with an all-composite bat realizes that composite bats are often not as hot "out of the wrapper" as they are after about 500 to 700 hundred hits have been put on to the bat. This is the main reason that "artificial break-in" techniques are applied to a bat, players want to cut down the time required to get their new bat to its top hitting performance. The amount of improvement in performance varies from bat to bat, but all composite bats tend to improve the more they are hit. This is true despite marketing claims that a particular composite bat is "hot right out of the wrapper".  This fact creates a problem for softball associations who are trying to reduce the on going problem of illegally altered bats because it can sometimes be hard to determine whether the increase in performance is due to the bat having been doctored or just due to its natural break-in process. Some of the associations are placing considerable pressure on manufacturers to manufacture bats that do not increase in performance over time.  This is almost an impossibility when it comes to composite type bats.  And while some of the processes being made for detecting bats which perform higher than the set mph performance standard may not be able to differentiate between an altered bat and a naturally broken-in bat, the associations' belief is that if a bat bears a certification stamp then it must perform at or below the performance limit represented by that stamp throughout the bat's entire life. The ASA did allow a plus or minus variance on the bats but that went away with the 2004 ASA standards and so did those bats (Freak, Synergy 2 etc.,).  But now it doesn't matter how the bat increased in mph performance; any increase in mph performance after the manufacturing of the bat it is not allowed.

An example of how serious associations are taking this issue, the ASA recently changed their bat certification policy. When the ASA certifies a bat as passing its 98-mph Batted-Ball Speed standard, that bat is expected to pass the standard for the life of the bat, even after being broken-in.  As of October, 2007 all composite bats are now being artificially broken-in using a bat rolling method before they are sent to the Sports Science Laboratory at Washington State University to be mph performance tested for certification.  I'm not exactly sure what it means for the future of ASA softball, or for the future of composite bats, but at the end of January, 2008, only one composite bat (including all 2007-2008 composite bat models that had previously been certified "out of the wrapper") has passed the 98-mph ASA certification test after being broken in by rolling.  The ASA is rumored to be changing its “out of the wrapper” batted ball speed to 93mph, this is shaking up the bat industry and some are debating whether to make ASA bats at all.  I would expect to see some changes in the design of composite bats in 2010 in accordance with the ASA policy change.  All bats will probably be made at the 93 mph limit to start because after bat rolling the bat will be right around 98mph.
