Secrets of Baseball Training Gloves

Baseball training mitts and gloves are not new. Their basic shape and design replicate the gloves used by the early Players of the game. When padded gloves made their appearance after world war II, utilizing two hands was the only way to gain ball control.

Imagine throwing a baseball at a large flat board. If perpendicular to the play, any ball striking the board will simply bounce back towards its origin. This is a great advantage for Players as the ball is in front of their line of site and between them and the play. Now, rotate the board 30 degrees behind perpendicular. Most players not using two hands have their glove in this position as they are reaching out in advance of the ball. With our board, any ball striking will continue its forward progress. The baseball will bounce up and behind the player.

The invention concerns a partially inflexible device which may be worn as a glove by one attempting to increase his glove/hand reaction time proficiency in the baseball skills of catching, fielding and catch/throw agility. It also may be used by an instructor or coach in demonstrating or teaching those skills to players of any skill level.

The glove has the palm portion thereof made inflexible whereby a user cannot flex the palm to catch a ball by squeezing it with his glove hand. Instead, the user is forced to use his free hand to trap a ball between the inflexible palm of the glove and the free hand. The inflexible palm portion of the glove can be integrally formed with the glove; it can be an insert, permanently secured into a pocket of the glove; or it can be an insert which can be easily inserted into and removed from a pocket of the glove.

Participation in the sport of baseball requires, as does participation in any physical activity involving the use of special techniques, the development of certain fundamental skills. Unless those fundamental skills become "second nature" to the player so that he executes them virtually automatically, and without hesitation or concentrated effort, his level of play will be curtailed.

This invention relates to improving one's skill in the baseball arts of fielding, catching and the combination of catch/throwing. As will be shown, by using the subject device, one automatically will practice the proper techniques of fielding ground balls, line drives and fly balls; of catching a ball thrown by another player and of catching and throwing a ball in one fluid motion.

A variety of situations arises during a baseball game where those techniques must be executed competently and quickly. To name but a few, an infielder must be able to field a ground ball and throw it without hesitation where the batter, or any base runner for that matter, is running quickly; an outfielder must be able to catch a batted ball, whether in the air or after it bounces, and with a quick release throw to the appropriate base or to home plate; an infielder, usually the second baseman or shortstop, must be able to catch a thrown ball and quickly pivot and throw to effect a double play. A game may be won or lost depending on proper execution.

Accordingly, baseball players at all levels of skills continually practice in an effort to increase and advance their level of play. Correspondingly, instructors and coaches of players who range from elementary school-age children to professional ballplayers insist on the development and enhancement of certain fundamental skills through repeated practice of properly demonstrated techniques. Players and coaches alike have had a long felt need for a training device that would enable one to develop those skills while reducing, if not eliminating, the potentiality of developing "bad habits" or poor skills.

The subject invention, which satisfies the aforementioned long felt need, is a device that provides the necessary means to advance the skills of any player. It is worn as a glove; indeed, its outward appearance may be that of an ordinary baseball glove. However, the pocket (that portion of the glove which covers the player's palm) and the portion at least one-third of the way up each finger is made inflexible, though it may be shock absorbent. Accordingly, when a ball is hit or thrown to a player wearing the subject training device, he must cover the ball with his ungloved hand immediately upon the ball's making contact with the rigid pocket, or else the ball will not be caught. In that way the player is properly taught to catch the ball with "two hands", i.e., to cover the ball immediately upon contact.

The preference for a "two handed" catch exists in virtually all situations -- ground balls, line drives, fly balls and thrown balls. Naturally, there are exceptions to any rule, but they are just that, exceptions. Sound fundamental skills require that one be able to perform the basics in a proficient way, and then be able to adapt as extraordinary situations arise (e.g. where one must jump, lunge or stretch in order to reach a thrown or hit ball with one hand).

Even with contemporary baseball glove technology, it is obvious that the advances in manufacturing and function still rely on basic skills to reach peak Player performance. Simple devices that can only function if used properly are the key to any Player success.

Gold Glove but bad fielding percentage?

Just wondering who are some gold glove winners who have had low fielding percentages in the gold glove year? (basically whos spectacular plays/range/arm made up for their sometimes lackluster errors?)

david wright last season. The only reason he even won it is because he's a media darling in new york. His fielding percentage was 5th lowest among NL third baseman last year among those who qualified (.954). Plus i think the voters felt sorry for him since the mets choked away that big fatass lead they had.

The Nike Baseball Gloves

Nike baseball gloves are a somewhat new endeavor for the company, although in recent years they have grown in approval. The company offers gloves in two product lines : "Pro Gold" and "SDR", with Pro Gold being the higher end gloves selling for higher price, and the SDR gloves selling from mid to higher price. Nike baseball gloves offer a "dri-fit" finger lining designed to keep the hand cool and dry, as well as a tanning process they claim makes Nike baseball gloves available for immediate use on the field.

Nike baseball gloves are just the latest product put out by the sporting goods and clothing goliath. Nike has long been known for its sneakers, its specialty sport cleats, it workout gear, its hats, and its sports gear. Ryan Adams Tickets-Ryan Adams Steps Back in the Studio

Alt-rock darling Ryan Adams just doesn't quit! The critical favorite is back in the studio despite his latest effort with his band the Cardinals, Cardinology, being barely a month old! The new material is loosely being titled Dear Impossible, and Adams is working with engineer Noah Goldstein on over a dozen new songs such as "Firefly," "Please, Hold One" and "Your Name Here." Adams has described the new material as similar to 2004's Love Is Hell and wrote on his blog that it is "like a more pop, melodic style." Bryan Adams was born in Jacksonville, NC and raised on the country music of classic artists like Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn and Merle Haggard, although in his teens his discovered punk rock and began playing electric guitar. This explains Adams' penchant for alt-country music that has burst into the mainstream. Adams formed his first band the Patty Duke Syndrome and relocated to Raleigh, NC with the group when he was 19, but the fledgling musician abandoned the projects in order to expand his musical horizons.

In 1994 Adams left PDS and formed Whiskeytown with guitarists Phil Wandscher and violinist Caitlin Cary. Bassist Steve Grothman and drummer Eric "Skillet" Gilmore completed the lineup and Whiskeytown (they got their name from a local slang word for getting drunk) released their debut album Faithless Street on local label Mood Food. The album was critically lauded and had fans saying it was just what the alt-country genre needed. By the time Whiskeytown signed with major-label Geffen's imprint Outpost Records and released Stranger's Almanac in 1997, Adams and Wandscher were the only band members left. For the next two years the lineup varied as Wandscher left and Cary returned among other shifts, and the band's third album, Pneumonia, was shelved due to label issues. Whiskeytown soon dissolved, leaving Adams to kick off a solo career with a string of solo acoustic tours.

After launching a solo career, Adams stepped in the studio in Nashville with songwriters Gillian Welch and David Rawlings to work of his first record under his own name. The resulting Heartbreaker was issued via pioneering label Bloodshot Records in 2000 and did well in sales, received positive critical reviews and was endorsed by none other than Elton John! After signing with Universal's new Americana imprint Lost Highway Records, the label rereleased Whiskeytown's Pneumonia in early 2001 and later that year issued Adam's sophomore solo effort, Gold. The album veered toward pop and rock reminiscent of the 1970s and its opening track, "New York, New York," was a popular radio anthem in the aftermath of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Hailed music's "next big thing," the prolific songwriter set out to work on another album and wound up with enough solid material to produce four albums, but instead Adams stripped down the 60+ songs to just 13 tracks to appear on 2002's Demolition. In 2003 the concept album Rock N Roll was released along with the double-EP Love Is Hell and Adams embarked on a rampant world tour.

In May 2005 the double-disc Cold Roses signaled the first of three releases for Lost Highway. The melancholic album was followed by Jacksonville City Nights that September, a classic honky-tonk record, and 29 that December. After delivering tracks to fans via his website, Adams released proper albums in the form on 2007's Easy Tiger and 2008's Cardinology with the Cardinals. What I Know and Rember About Baseball - Game Ready Gloves

Game Ready Baseball Gloves? Hey Dad! You know what's best, don't let your children make the decision

These are superb for toddlers through first year t-ball where the only time these players take the mitt out is at their limited practices and games.

Collateral consequences of the game ready glove is the all important two handed catch. Better known as the alligator catch. As a species, we humans will do what ever we can to minimize the energy we put into anything. We are hard-wired to conserve energy, motions and emotions. So using a superior catching machine diminishes the value of using the second hand with the subordinate result of not using it. Yes, there is success in catching the ball, but for youngsters the culmination of repetitive tasks is what gets them to the next step, Little League. You bet, all these little people want to make the plays like the Big Boys in the Show, but after thousands of hours of perfect practice and hundreds of hours in game situation play those pro's have earned the right to get outside of the box with their movements. Not to mention they are paid big bucks to WIN and make the jaw dropping catches. Don't get me wrong, what these guys can do is nothing short of amazing. But when you do this for a living, you spend you days chasing the tough catch. Different level of the game, greater degree of difficulty at practice.

Stiffer gloves serve multiple purposes. First, you are not going to field a grounder with one hand. It takes two until the glove is broken in and by then is pretty much second nature to use two. Second, you don't need to replace these gloves every year (or after a week hiding on the floor in the back of the family grocery getter). Third, heavier leather gloves tend to stay open with the effort being applied in the closing process. Game readies tend to stay closed where the back of the fingers are used to open the pocket, exactly backwards of how the hand wants to work.

Our little leagues play to win with their hearts. Of all the people I played with we all remember our first non-vinyl glove. Many used these same gloves all through junior high and well into high school. Emotional attachments to these lumps of leather sewn together with thread and cowhide laces go deep. Our current culture has moved substantially from those of the inventors of the game. At that period of American History, the only time something was not in active use by its owner was when the worms were turning it back into the soil (and you thought recycling is a new thing). Even well into the 80's, on rosters of continuing teams, everyone knew which glove belongs to whom at the get go of the season. This level of instant recognition is diminishing as more and more players arrive each year with a new glove. Sadly the process is pressing the once prideful ownership to a comparative of new seasons offerings and yet another trip to the store for the children to make another selection.

Game ready are soft with good tact that will last a normal recreational season. Even for adults' that plan to play in 4 or 5 games a year, these will go the distance for a couple of seasons. But if you are going to lay out $50 or $60 to get a year or two of service, why not step up to the $120's and get a real glove that will go the distance. They catch better, feel better, last longer and you will be proud of what you posses. Even when the new models arrive, yours will still be preferred.

What was that? There is no difference until you spend nearly $200. Well, it takes a bit of looking but you can get steer hide gloves from Kelley Athletics starting at $99. What I am trying to point out is, if you have a limited budget, spend your time freely finding as many opportunities as you can. Better to have the money in your pocket than giving away for no good reason.

Oh Dad, bye the way, 10 minutes on Saturday during the off season, you know between finishing breakfast and reading the paper but before the game starts, is all it takes to get your little leaguers glove ready, gives you the time to help instill good habits (butt down - hands out - watch the ball into the glove - two hands) and the time spent, well... .. priceless... ..

How To Choose A New Fastpitch Softball Glove

There are many choices in Fastpitch Softball Gloves today. It can be very confusing to choose the best glove for you with all the sizes, styles, materials and models available today.
Fastpitch Softball Gloves generally have a larger pattern (length) than a baseball glove because the ball is larger. A deeper pocket is usually designed into a softball glove as well. Akadema, one of the most exciting new glove manufacturers; designed some Women's and Girls Fastpitch Softball gloves with smaller finger slots. The distance between the thumb and index finger is shorter to accommodate a smaller hand.

One important thing to know is that you should not buy a glove that your child can “grow into”. The glove needs to fit properly and be the proper length (this is usually called the Pattern size of the glove) to allow them to develop proper fielding mechanics and not cheat by having a longer glove. A proper fitting glove will also help the beginning player feel more confident because the glove is snug on the hand and easier to manage and won’t keep falling off.
Remember, a six or eight year old child has a pretty small hand and not as strong as those 14A level players on the next field over.

How To Measure a Glove

Fastpitch Softball Gloves and First Base Mitts are measured from the top of the index finger of the glove down along the inside of the pocket and out to the heal of the glove. Fastpitch gloves will typically measure from 12 inches to 14.5 inches with youth sizes being smaller.
You should use a flexible tape measure or a length of lace or string. This is so while measuring it can lay in the palm of the glove as it measures giving you an accurate measurement. Measure from the highest point of the index finger.

Catchers Mitts are measured around the circumference of the mitt. All gloves and mitts are measured in inches typically. A Fastpitch Softball Catchers Mitt will measure in the 33 inch to 34.5 inch range. Youth sizes can be smaller.

I still don’t understand what size my kid is! Parents of a beginning player can ask your coach, or have your child try on some of the other kid's gloves to see how they fit. Oufielders: Normally, Fastpitch Softball Outfielders like a larger glove in the 12.5" to 14" pattern. Infielders: Generally, Fastpitch Softball Infielders prefer a smaller pattern,in the 12" to 12.5" range. This smaller size allows a quicker grab and quicker transfer of the ball to the throwing hand.
There are some new designs that are almost fingerless. These allow you to scoop up that ground ball even quicker.
Sometimes an infielder prefers an open web like the outfielders and sometimes they like them closed to provide more stopping power and control.

Pitchers Usually like a glove that has a closed web. This allows them to hide the ball longer in the glove. Pitchers sometimes like a longer pattern like an outfielder to hide the ball. There are Fastpitch Softball Pitchers gloves designed by professional players. These sometimes have features such as less lacing or no knots on the outside to protect the leg when they slap the glove against it on the release of the ball. I know, pitchers can be weird about things.

First Baseman Mitts are similar to a regular fielders glove but have more of a mitt shape to them. They don't have fingers, but instead have a thin but stiff pad that runs around the circumference of the glove. They are usually larger to help scoop up those "bad" throws. This larger size gives them more control to catch the softball with. There are still a lot of first basewomen that use a standard fielders glove also.
It is not required to use a First Base Mitt if you play first base but you can not use a First Base or Catchers Mitt at any other fielding position.

Catchers Mitts are probably the most specific and don't look much like the other gloves. They are kind of round in shape and are measured by the circumference of the mitt. Fastpitch Softball Catchers Mitts usually are in the 33" to 34.5" range. They sometimes have added or special palm padding to help with the sting of a really fast pitcher.
Today's Fastpitch Catchers mitt is larger and shallower than it used to be making it more flexible and similar to a First base mitt. This allows for quicker ball transfer, which is essential in this very quick game of Fastpitch Softball.

Web Styles:

Open Web gloves are typically preferred by the middle infielders, first basemen and some outfielders. This Open Web helps hold the ball better and allows you to transfer the ball quicker. These are Fastpitch Gloves with a "T" or "H" web design. There are many variations of these webs.

Closed Web gloves usually preferred by Pitchers, third and some outfielders allows the ball to be hidden from the batter and also gives better support when catching an outfield fly or line drive.
This web type basically means you can't see through it. These would be the "Beehive" or "Spiral Lock" type webs. There are many variations of these webs.

Open Back or Closed Back

Open Back gloves are usually a little cooler and lighter. They can be fitted more snugly on the wrist. There are different methods for adjusting the strap; Velcro and D-rings are common methods.

Closed Back gloves usually just have a hole for your index finger to slip through. Some have a Velcro strap or D-ring to help adjust the size and make it a more snug fit.

Most Fastpitch Softball gloves should be worn with a batting glove on the hand. This will help keep moisture from the inside of the glove. This can also help take the sting out of hard throws and adjust the fit of the glove. Change the batting glove if it becomes wet. Some leagues don't allow the pitcher to wear a batting glove. Supposedly it distracts the batter.

Materials

Most of today's gloves are made from a top-quality leather. There are some cheaper brands that use mostly synthetic materials. These are not going to last nearly as long as a quality leather glove but may be all you need at the moment.

A good quality Fastpitch Softball glove will be made of Steerhide, Cowhide, Buffalo hide, Kip leather (a younger or smaller steer), pigskins or other exotic animal hides.
Steerhide is generally the better material and it comes in several variations. Buffalo hide is good too but usually is much stiffer, so it requires a lot more break in. Manufacturers will tan the hide and give it brand names. This is a subject for another article.
Higher end, higher quality gloves usually are made from heavier leathers that help them last longer and perform differently and better.

Remember to take care of your new glove and it will take care of you on the field. Use only manufacturer suggested glove conditioners, if it gets wet then dry it with a towel and let it air dry – never use a hair dryer. Then you can apply a small amount of conditioner if necessary.
When the game is over, wipe the dirt from your glove and any excess moisture. Put a ball in the pocket and tie it with a length of pre-wrap just like you use to hold your hair back.

Teaching Baseball Players How to Throw

In the play of the baseball the correct mechanics of launching is of primary importance. If a jet of the can'T of player with exactitude it makes its team little good outside in the field. The players must constantly try to improve their mechanics of launching. Few players take time necessary to become the really good launchers. The great pride should be taken when a player can uniformly throw to a target.

Key points in launching

The Handle

Many young players seize the ball with their distant too broad of fingers. This affects exactitude reduces the speed of the jet severely. The fingers should be about 1/4 inch with share (about the width of a yellow pencil #2). The index and the average finger should extend through the broad seams from the ball. This handle is also known as 4-bend the fastball. The trimmings of the index and the average finger rest on the seam of the ball. If you think of the ball like clock, the average index and fingers should put back each side of the clock of 12'O and the inch would rest directly under the ball with the clock of 6'O. Action Of Arm

Quality matters when selecting a baseball glove

If you play baseball, you truly know how valuable a baseball glove is, and more for just its quality. There are many good baseball gloves out there made by various companies, such as Rawlings (my favourite, and viewed by many, as the best), Wilson and Reebok (just to name a few).

A good glove can make the world of difference: yes, if you are talented at baseball no matter what glove you use, you'll still be good, and vice versa. However, quality does help, and that is why picking the right glove for you is important.

The right size and feel, along with the position you play, is very important when deciding to purchase a glove. For instance, there are bat catcher gloves, first baseman gloves, infield and outfield gloves. Hopefully you'll know what position you are playing and when you do, and you have factored in all of the criteria I have mentioned, it's time to pick out the right one.

In addition to the size and feel the company you select also matters since quality is directly linked to  a company’s product. Going with unrecognized or generic brand is usually not a very wise choice.

You will probably have these baseball gloves for a long time, and it is amazing how attached you'll get to it. I know that it sounds strange, but after awhile, you won't want to play without it (I know that this is the case for me). It sounds strange, but it almost becomes a part of you.

The Different Types of Goalkeeping Gloves in the Market Today

Goalkeeping Gloves are cool. The Goalkeeper in a soccer or football game is considered as one of the key players. It is this player who saves the team by making sure that the other teams ball does not score appoint.

The function of a goalkeeper is to catch the football which is being aimed into the goalpost and mostly the goalkeeper does it by trying to catch the ball which is being kicked into the net.

This is why it is of utmost importance that goalkeepers wear gloves so that they can have a better grip on the ball and also their fingers, palm and wrists are well protected and cushioned so that they are not hurt by the speed of the ball. It is a known fact that football players called strikers tend to kick the ball with terrific speed.

And in order to protect themselves from hurting their hands while trying to catch the ball it is essential that goalkeepers are fitted with the best possible pair of gloves.

Depending on the level of skills of the goalie, different weather conditions and pockets there are a variety of goalie gloves. Most goalkeepers have 2 pairs of gloves, one which they use for practice and the other for the main game. The best soccer players use an inexpensive glove pair during practice while they wear the best expensive pair for the game.

Goalkeeper gloves are made of smooth latex which gives the best possible grip while there are also gloves which are made from dimpled and textured latex which provide more durability but these are not as good as the latex gloves. It is a known fact that the thicker the latex the performance of the gloves also is much better. Better protection is given to the wrist and finger bands so they are not hurt.

It is essential that the goalie gloves fit the wearer snuggly but not too tightly. The hand should fit correctly inside the glove and there should not be much movement inside. The gloves should be well padded and flexible so that the ball can be manipulated.
