Why are there so many broken bats in baseball nowadays?

The White Sox TV announcers say it is a dangerous situation.

Is the new wave of broken bats from:

A) The new maple wood bat craze
B) Second and third generation wood from replanted trees that aren't as solid
C) Stronger players
D) The design of the bats
E) Other?

Maple is a less stable wood, more prone to splitting. It does give more power with comparable swings. Hence, its popularity.
The another factor is bat design. Players are opting for thinner handles allowing them greater bat speed but resulting in a more fragile bat.

Asia has again made their mark on Baseball in America. Bamboo Baseball bats have become increasingly popular among youth and amateur baseball players in the U.S. and across the globe for that matter. Bamboo bats have yet to receive the stamp of approval from Major League Baseball, and most people think that stamp of approval will not be coming at all.

There are a lot of people asking why Bamboo has yet to be accepted into the MLB? So let’s go over the main arguments keeping Bamboo on the outside of Major League Parks.

Here is a Major League Baseball Rule that addresses this particular issue….1.10

(a) The bat shall be a smooth, round stick not more than 23/4 inches in diameter at the thickest part and not more than 42 inches in length. The bat shall be one piece of solid wood.
NOTE: No laminated or experimental bats shall be used in a professional game (either championship season or exhibition games) until the manufacturer has secured approval from the Rules Committee of his design and methods of manufacture.

Bamboo bats are made by laminating a bunch of bamboo strips into a blank, and then turning the blank into a bat. Which makes the bat very hard to break, and obviously violates rule 1.10 (as shown above) which states that the bat shall be one piece of solid wood.

Although that rule seems to be a big part of why Bamboo Bats are not MLB approved, there seems to be a more popular argument used.  Bamboo bats are widely considered to be similar to composite bats based on the way they are made. Composite bats are also off limits in the MLB. Most experts believe that Bamboo will never receive Major League Baseball’s approval unless the MLB approves all composite bats.

So, now looms the bigger question. How will Bamboo Baseball bats survive in America? Well since Bamboo bats seem to be so durable, many youth and amateur players and teams are using them as Batting Cage bats. More coaches and players are catching onto the benefits of training with wood bats, even if they play in an Aluminum Bat league.  Hitting with wood forces the hitter to swing with proper mechanics, while aluminum often delivers good results even when improper mechanics are used.

Maple Bats, Ash Bats, and Birch bats all provide better power than Bamboo, but none of them provide the durability that Bamboo does. That means a perfect match for Bamboo Baseball Bats and
Batting Cages. A player or team can reap the benefits of training with wood, without having to continually purchase wood bats because of overuse. Bamboo bats are becoming a big part of the resurgence of wood bats in America. So in a game where so much has changed, wood is looking like the one constant that doesn’t plan on going anywhere soon.

Need help from baseball players on getting started in the sport.?

I am a high school junior really interested in playing baseball for my schools team this year. The only problem is, I've never played baseball before save one year in little leagues, therefore, I need good advice on how to make up for all those lost years. Nevertheless, I am determined to try my hardest to not only make the team, but to be a solid player also. However, I really need tips and pointers to guide me on my way. When I was playing the best way to get some fundamentals in was to find a brick wall and throw a tennis ball against it and do not let the tennis ball get by you. That helps with your footwork and with hand-eye coordination.

And for hitting, this sounds weird but it works, to help get your eye on the ball, I always took an old beat up bat and found an empty parking lot and I'd throw a small gravel sized rock in the air and try to hit it, doing all this by myself. When you start getting good at picking up the rock in air and hitting it then imagine how easy hitting a baseball starts to become!

The Physics Behind Bat Rolling

Everyone knows that a composite and a wooden bat to a lesser degree becomes a far more effective bat after 500-600 hits but not everyone understands why? Is there some magic involved? Also, if a bat can get better with use is is possible that the opposite is true? Is there some process by which a bat can become less effective for hitting balls?

A Worse Bat

The truth is that there are a number of things that can be done to a bat to make it worse such as painting it with a triple thick coat of enamel. Its all hypothetical though, because there really is no point in making a bat less effective at that it is used for.

Composites in Manufacturing

The group of materials that are used in the manufacture of a composite bat are used to make numerous consumer items. Fibers of graphite, carbon or glass, bound together by polymers in a linear fashion and that is it. Sail boat masts, airplane parts, car parts and the list of things made from polymer fiber composites increases every day.

The Problem

Composite bats made by this process using graphite are fantastic but they do have one shortcoming when they come off the assembly line. That is that the polymers and the fibers are in fact too solidly bound together reducing the “spring”. The problem is that there is no point in the process where this can be remedied without effecting the integrity of the overall process.

A Better Process for a Better Bat

By rolling a composite bat between to hard rummer wheels the bat is effectively broken in by duplicating the same process that would take place by hitting 500-600 balls. There is one notable difference though and that is that by doing it with a rolling machine, the process is distributed evenly over the entire bat eliminating any weak or soft spots.
