But what I am saying is?you can participate in a golf fitness training program with minimal equipment and can do it right in your home or even your office.

How ?

With only a stability ball, exercise tubing and a pair of handweights. Grand total?under $60 for your "total golf fitness gym". That's about one months membership to your local club that you'll visit once or twice and never go back (but keep paying every month).

I want you to get that picture out of your head of the "muscle-bound" hulk, heaving hundreds of pounds with on arm, slamming it to the floor and letting out the infamous LOUD GRUNT for attention.

No..you'll be doing golf-specific exercises with bands, balls and handweights that will quickly and directly benefit your golf swing. Sports conditioning or in this instance golf fitness training requires you to use your body in space incorporating balance, stabilization and sequence of timing just like your golf swing.

The direct correlation results in longer, more accurate drives, hitting a larger number of greens in regulation; and walking off the course beating the pants off of your playing partners.

Now that's "instant gratification" at its best!

And how about no more injuries! I'm dead serious! All those aches and pains finally gone. Forever! A stronger more flexible body will have a much higher level of resistance to pain and injury. And the added bonus is swinging "easier" and with much less effort, but seeing the ball go much further and straighter. It will feel like an "out-of-body" experience.

A few words of caution!

If you hear or see any programs touting they are golf fitness and see the golfer and/or trainer using the basic machines in the gym, this is NOT golf fitness training. This is without a doubt "general fitness". Not altogether a bad thing, but won't directly help your golf game.

Working on a stability ball, and using tubing and handweights you can mimic many phases of the golf swing and at the same time challenge your core stabilization, balance and muscular endurance. All critical factors in achieving optimal swing mechanics for 18 holes.

And?they're fun to use. You'll never get board. You can always make it more challenging from a balance and/or stabilization factor.

Just try to get one of those "muscle-heads" on a stability ball lifting the same heavy weights they use. Call the medics..cause it's going to get ugly real quick.

You see?most people who workout in the gym never challenge their proprioceptive awareness (or simply?using their body in space). This is the key to great golf.

The stronger you can get your core stabilizers, coupled with increased rotational flexibility?you're headed to an awesome game of golf. You'll definitely be the envy of your foursome.

A great recommendation would be to get yourself the famous golfing manual. More than 19,000 golfers in 36 countries on six continents swear our System fixed their swing problems once and for all.

Power can be hard to get hold of to golfers. Is actual power produced by means of technique, strength or something more? Every golfer desires added strength, added distance, added consistency. Here are 3 ways to create the sort of power you have barely dreamed of…until now.

Power can be elusive to golfers. Is genuine power generated through technique, strength or something more? Every golfer wants more power, more distance, more consistency. Here are 3 ways to create the kind of power you have only wished of…until now.

1. Spinal Rotation. Each time you swing the golf club, you rotate around your spine. So, what does this have to do with power? Power is produced each time you stabilize your hips to construct a full backswing with spinal rotation. A good number of golfers have heard of the X factor. This, of course, refers to the differential linking the movement in your hips and your spine. Intensify your spinal rotation and a fresh awareness of power will be released.

2. Core Based Training. Your body's "core", the part all-around your trunk and pelvis, is where your axis of gravity is positioned. Whilst you have decent core stability, the muscles in your pelvis, lower back, hips and abdomen perform in harmony. They present support to your spine. The core is the power zone. It is where all movement begins. A well-developed core allows for superior strength output, better neuromuscular effectiveness, and decreased frequency of overuse injuries. A weak core can make you susceptible to poor posture and injury.

3. Plyometrics. Plyometrics are any exercise where the muscle is contracted eccentricly then immediately, concentricly. Put simply, the muscle is stretched (i.e. loaded) before it is contracted. A good example is medicine ball horizontal twists and standing golf swings. According to a recent study published in the National Strength and Conditioning Association’s (NSCA) journal, amateur golfers significantly increased their driving distances after just eight weeks of strength training while incorporating plyometrics. Mean driving distance increased 4.3% for the combined training group, with mean club head speed increasing 1.5%.

Once you incorporate these 3 techniques into your exercise program, you’ll never be disgruntled about driving distance or power generation again.  If your really serious about increasing your power at the tee, you really need to do some form of strength training.  Driving the ball is not all just about the procedure of the drive, it's also about muscle training your core section which is a certain in just about any sport.  You may possibly enjoy perfect form but, when it comes to driving the ball further you do need to contentrate on strengthening your center of gravity for much further drives and superior accurracy.

This is necessary when you would like to learn how to hit longer drives, cure your golf slice and especially break 80.

Core strengthening is essential and critical to hitting longer drives. See what other golfers are using and doing to do just that. Plus, learn how to cure golf slice as well when adding more power behind your swing.

In my last article post I finished with suggesting a mantra for life - what the mind can perceive, the mind can believe, and the mind can achieve. Have you noticed how true this is? What is in your mind, your thoughts, your memories, and the things you know to be "right" are simply your own perceptions of reality.

You and I could be standing at a junction and you see the traffic light is red and I see it to be green. It all depends upon the angle from which you are observing the lights. It depends on your perspective. You could, of course, choose to walk to the other side and view it from a different angle.

I would like you to take one minute now to carry out a simple task. Wherever you are at this moment in time, take one minute to look around you and notice, really notice, what around you is the colour blue. Notice as many things that you can that contain the color blue. Spend a full minute really noticing everything that is blue...and then read on.

Now, without looking around again, can you list what is the color red? This simple exercise should demonstrate what happens in everybody's mind ALL of the time. Our observations and the judgments which we make of "reality" are shaped and colored by what we are focusing on, by what we expect to see or happen. Thus our perceptions are not only shaped by the angle of observation but also by our expectation, our underlying beliefs – we see what we expect to see. This is true of everything in life, not just golf. But in golf the effect is so very noticeable!

As Kendal McWade, the genius behind Instinctive Golf, states "Golf balls always do what they are told". Now, if you are telling yourself that you are a bad putter, what are you telling the ball to do? Putting can so ably demonstrate the doubt and fear that holds us back in everyday life – emotions which can literally stop us in our tracks.

A child is not born with fear. We learn fear. Sometimes fear is a useful emotion and protects us from danger, but let's face it, a putt shouldn't be fearful. Even Tiger says that when he was a teenager he would hit the first putt so solidly that if it missed it might go five feet past the hole, and would simply rap it back into the hole without worry or fear...but that as he has got older he isn't quite as fearless. Fears can creep into even the strongest of minds...if you allow them to do so.

So how do we remove fear when it's not needed? How can we change state easily and quickly? Awareness is all important. Most of us are not really aware of the thoughts that are running through our minds. And yet your thoughts create your emotions and direct your actions (and the club and the ball). Let us try another exercise. Stop reading and spend the next minute just observing your thoughts. Notice just how many thoughts pass through your mind in one minute.

How many did you have? I bet there were quite a few. How many thoughts do you have in the very short time in which you swing a golf club? Or, more precicely, how many thoughts do you try to have whilst swinging the club? And how many thoughts run through your mind as you are setting up to the ball, be it for a tee shot or for a putt? Five, ten, fifteen?

Once you become aware of these myriad thoughts, it is easy to understand why the outcome of the shot can be unpredictable to say the least. All of those thoughts can be likened to ants running through your mind, each competing for your attention and focus, thereby taking your awareness away from what really matters - the ball and the target. These two things never change; or, at least, they shouldn't change, assuming you have taken the time to select an exact target.

So the question is "how do we stop these ant-like thoughts from crawling all over our minds?" Cast your mind back to when you were a child and the answer should come to you quite easily. Children's emotions change quick as a flash, crying one moment and laughing the next. They change state easily, quickly, INSTANTANEOUSLY; you and I were born with this ability; it's an instinctive part of us. When a child falls over and scrapes their knees, they cry, and what does the parent do? The adult offers a sweet, they DISTRACT their attention away from the knees that are hurting.

The easiest way in which to displace a negative thought (or a selection of negative thoughts which are competing for your attention) is to give your mind something clear and precise to do. Give your mind something meaningful, interesting and relevant to do, something that is fascinating.

Fear is a function of either the past or the future. Fear does not exist if you are focusing on the now. Think about that for a moment. What are you afraid of on the golf course? The putt not rolling in? That's in the future. The memory of the last shot sailing into the trees? That's in the past. Making a fool of yourself? That's in the future.

So when you are approaching a shot on the golf course, allow the "child" in you to surface - the part of you that's fascinated, curious, the part of you that's "in the now". I was playing with a friend the other day and when we reached the green and saw where my ball was I said something to the effect of "oh, wow! This is an interesting one!" My playing partner's response was "is that a new reframe for "Oh Hell?"!

Try it...and notice the effect. Because if you are "in the now" you will be aware of what you need to be aware of - the ball and the target. And if you are sizing up the situation with child-like wonder and fascination, you will be thinking "how can I get this in" or something to that effect, rather than being a puppet manipulated by A-N-Ts (Automatic Negative Thoughts).

Being "in the now" is a wonderful place to be. It allows you to be aware of what is really happening around you, to appreciate each moment for what it is. It allows you to notice when a rhododendron leaf glistens in the sunshine, or water sparkling as if thousands of stars are twinkling on its surface, and so on. It allows you to notice the feel of the fairway beneath your feet, the feel of the club in your hands, to notice the feel of your swing. (And wouldn't greater feel come in handy?) Being in the now allows you to enjoy the time between shots, remaining relaxed and peaceful; it allows you to fully enjoy the game of golf, AND the game of life. If you aren't in the now, you aren't really living.

Another wonderful thing about being in the now is that you reap the rewards immediately - literally in the now. So many people say that it is impossible to change without hard work and effort. What can be hard about noticing what's happening now? What can be hard when you are interested and curious and fascinated? When you are in the now, past beliefs cannot hold you back.

Are you ready to control your golfing destiny? Are you ready to make a commitment to yourself to play golf "in the now"? Are you willing to allow the natural instinct for wonder and fascination to come to the forefront of your mind? Are you ready to enjoy your golf and play better golf than ever before? Because you are the only person who can choose your thoughts. All you have to do is to choose to do so.

3 Stress Games That Will Relief Your Stress

Stress is something that each and every one of us faces and has to deal with daily. There are times when stress can get the best out of us. It can make life really difficult, and if not dealt with properly may lead to numerous health problems. This is why it is important that we deal with stress in the most positive way that we can. To help you manage your stress effectively, here are 3 stress games that will relief your stress.

1. Board Games or Puzzles

I am sure that you have had one of those days, where it seems like everything that can go wrong already has and you simply cannot take anymore nonsense in your life. You can gradually feel the stress and headache develop in your head. Then something unexpected makes you laugh, one of those good belly laughs. Before you knew it, your stress is gone. Whatever was bothering you seems to have disappeared.

One of the best ways to relief stress is to play games that make you laugh, as they will help take your mind off all your troubles. Try a game of charades or Pictionary with a group of friends, or other online games that are relaxing to help relief some tension.

Puzzles are the favorite of many. They include jigsaw puzzles, word puzzles, word searches and such. All of these games work to keep your mind preoccupied. Your mind will be busy focusing on the tasks before you; and therefore have no chance to think about all your worries and troubles.

2. Exercise

Exercising does not necessarily mean working out at the gym. While for some, the best way to handle stress is to get a good work out, however, you can always consider other less intensive games if you prefer a lighter exercise regime. For instance, participating in outdoor sports like softball, baseball or even football helps to remove some of the pressure that you are facing as your mind is focused elsewhere. An entire hour of physical activity will definitely make you feel better and refreshed.

If you are not into sports, consider taking a roll in the park or at the beach. Getting a breather and some fresh air will surely make you feel good about yourself.

3. Hobbies

Having a hobby or doing something that interests you will help relief your stress. They range from reading a book, to sewing or even gardening. Some men may prefer flying model plans, going fishing or golfing. These are all hobbies that can help one relief stress as they provide lots of enjoyment and fun. Make a date with yourself and give yourself a much deserved break. You do them on a routine basis so as to manage your stress effectively, instead of waiting for it to build up. Dealing with stress is essential to having good and enhanced health.

These 3 stress games that will relief your stress has worked for many. So, get your life back on track by preventing or managing stress effectively today.

Baseball Gloves For Men And Women

Gloves, like the hands they fit, come in a variety of sizes. Baseball and softball gloves also are geared to fit both the position you play and the level of your pastime. Keep these factors in mind when you decide which kind, size, features and materials best suit your sport.

Baseball gloves have traditionally been a man's field of product-ware in the arena of baseball gear. No longer the condition in this day and age. With more women's leagues taking upon the ball diamonds nationwide, and on major playing circuits, the manufacturers now provide specially to the female athlete and the needs to adjust the products available to suit the differences in the frame of all athletes.

Customary baseball gloves can blaze your palm off if you happen to be aiming your catch for a fast ball moving at elevated swiftness. The familiarity for a female athlete can be a searing nerve crunch that sends your reflexes into crisis mode where you instinctively throw your glove off of your hand and are left with a red-as-an-apple circular, fleeting tattoo of pain.

How do you find the proper mitt that can be qualified to execute to your capacity to exercise dual hand and eye coordination, without having too much padding to cause the ball to hop right out of your mitt? As with all products that are becoming available tailored to women that were not formerly made with women in mind, it has been some trial and error in achieving the finished mitt for the female player.

Women players seeking a acceptable baseball glove to improve their play should look for ones that are designed to fit a female hand. You will find the quality and performance to be identical to that of the customary baseball gloves, and your own exactness and margin for error will diminish as you are fitted into a glove made to work with your one of a kind bone make-up .

Smaller finger stalls yield greater control overall, as well as adjustable wrist straps, which allow for your own fluctuations in fluids in your body, factors in your physical health as a woman athlete that matter when you want your execution to be top notch!

Your baseball or softball glove should fit your game, the position you play and your playing time and proficiency. Although age is also a factor, the position you play is the most consequential consideration in choosing a baseball or softball glove.

What You, Worry?

I am always amused what people are worried about nowadays.

How they look in a mirror, their clothes, their "style", what type of car they drive, how they have the right bracelet, to match the right earrings, to go with the stylish ankle bracelet, down to the matching toe ring.

I'm serious here.......

Or better yet, they're worried about how many video games they are going to play today, how many movies they are going to rent, and how many bags of candy they can polish off in one sitting.

Too bad there is not enough focus on the many teen fitness concerns out there.

Ok, maybe I'm focusing a little too much on you "kids" here (lol).......

Unless, you parents are doing this too (lol).

Don't worry kids.....many parents need to go to a adult fitness camp too.........

Worried to beat traffic, worry to get to work early, worry to finish everything at work so fast so you can get home quickly to drive your kids to softball, baseball, music, dance practices, then run home, shove down a greasy hamburger, fries, and your favorite carbonated beverage, then watch some TV, get heartburn, and go to bed.

Sounds like a great life, huh?

Sign me up!........just kidding, of course.

Unfortunately, what I have just written (or very close to it) is all too knowing for many people/families in this world.

It's sad really.

It's sad (to me at least) to see that people put SO MUCH IMPORTANCE on stuff like this and almost zero importance on their health and well-being.

I'm about to give you a big secret......

A secret that almost nobody (again, unfortunately) follows......

You ready???

Are you sure??? (lol), OK.......

*****Don't wait until it's too late to "worry" about your health.*****

Profound, isn't it?

But so true.

So many people nowadays with all the hustle and bustle that goes along with everyday life: work, family, kids, stress, after-school activities, laundry, home repairs, mowing your yard, weeding flowerbeds, washing floors, doing dishes.......how do you have time for your health?????

Answer: You make time for it.

So many things we do are of little importance, but yet we "worry" about them so much. Then, when one of our loved ones falls ill, or develops a disease, virus, etc., we all ask "what went wrong?" Invariably, it is everything that I have talked about in this article (at least to an extent).

So, what can YOU do?

Well, for starters, why don't you "worry" (not being paranoid, mind you......more like being aware of the situation) about your health and fitness.

Instead of worrying if your new shirt matches all 35 pairs of your pants.......why don't you "worry" how you can make tonight's dinner 50% healthier for you and your family.

Or "worry" how you can eat a more nutritious breakfast every morning (preferably not donuts and Pop-Tarts, washed down with a nice, tall sugar-laced beverage).

You see, making small changes like the ones I am suggesting do SO MUCH for your overall health and fitness, it's not even funny.

I hate to start throwing out clichés, but as they say......

"An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure"

Unfortunately, for some of you it should be "An ounce of prevention is worth 20 pounds of cure".

Or maybe 40 pounds.

Heck, it might be 100 pounds.

The amount really doesn't matter.

What does matter is that you better get off your tail and hold yourself accountable for your health.

YOU can make better decisions.

YOU can make time for fitness (also, let's get off our butts, and help put a stop to all these teen fitness concerns).

YOU can lead your family by example.

Don't wait until you have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, clogged arteries.....etc.

Why put yourself through all that pain and expense (time and money)???

Why don't you look ahead (and I'm not talking about to tonight's dinner), and gauge where you want to be at in 1 year, 5 years, 10 years.

Hint: your goal should be to be in the best shape you can possibly be in, at all times.

Let me be the first (or next) to tell you that you can do it.......I believe in you!

Everyone can make a positive change, but ultimately, it is up to YOU to get started.......

So, get started NOW........and like I always say........I am here to help. Please write me at chris@fitnesswithchris.com and visit my website www.fitnesswithchris.com and let me show you how to "worry" about your fitness. Talk to you soon.

Worth Liberty

With Liberty and Justice for Allâ??Even Republicans

The purpose of this piece is to reassure its readers (and perhaps, its author), that civil liberties are not a concern relegated solely to the opponents of the Bush White House. Let me start off this essay by incurring much wrath in clearly identifying myself as a lifelong Republican, and a supporter of this Administration's policies in the Middle East and in Iraq, in particular. Those whose judgment is so driven by obsessive hatred of George W. Bush that they prefer to see the failure of American interest in the international arena, than to endure a scintilla of success for Team Bush should, in any rational world, be ashamed of themselves for their lack of patriotism, to say the least. In addition, the readiness of some to declare his policies a failure smacks of intellectual dishonesty. Any student of history worth his or her salt knows that the success or failure of a policy—ANY policy—is not evident for at least fifty years, or more. Alas, however, we do not live in a rational, or an intellectually honest, world.

In spite of my political leanings, it is an unfortunate reality that our President is a divisive figure. Part of this is a function of his inability to project intelligence, and the resultant, and mistaken public impression (reinforced relentlessly and cynically by his detractors) of him as shallow and, indeed, stupid. I am naive enough to believe that idiots don't make it to the White House, and that this President suffers merely from an enhanced form of his father's estrangement from, and lack of fluency in, the English Language. That, coupled with a Texas drawl, a goofy grin and an inability to put forth bon mots in a spontaneous way, leaves the American public with a perception of him as something of a dimwit. Those who know the President personally (I am not among them) know this to be false. I agree wholeheartedly, in large measure because I have seen the man's work and am, for the most part, satisfied with it. Irrespective of the views of both his supporters and detractors, history, most importantly, will judge him on his deeds and not on his media-created (or distorted) image.

Add to this a genuine weakness of this President: his apparent reliance on personal friendship and trust, in lieu, sometimes, of good independent judgment, and his willingness to subscribe to secrecy and close counsel for its own sake, and his constituency is left to wonder: "what is this not-very-intelligent guy up to? Perhaps he really does mean to drop a few nukes on Iran." Now, as viscerally satisfying as "dropping a few nukes on Iran" may seem to some of us, it is probably bad policy, and even worse policy to leak to the media that it is even being considered.

Putting all of that to the side, however, and given this writer's support for the War on Terror and the Bush policies in Iraq, what concerns me the most is the utter lack of public discourse on the real issues which arise from these policies. I refer, of course, to the price demanded of our civil liberties and the evolving change of balance as between our rights and the powers ceded to law enforcement. And when I allude to public discourse, of course, I am not referring to the debate among the talking heads on Washington Week in Review, and its three or four weekly viewers, or the weekly bloodsport/screamfest-passing-for-discussion known as The McLaughlin Group. Rather, I am wondering: what happened to the "public" in public discourse? In the middle of a war, in the midst of a crisis in which the "President" of Iran speaks of wiping Israel off the map, and at a time in which the arrogation of power to law enforcement has resulted in so-called "free speech" zones at which the public may gather to express their displeasure with government policy, the public discourse devolves into discussion of such earth-shattering concerns such as who will prevail on American Idol, or who will be America's Next Top Model.

I am sure, perhaps with some justification, to be accused of intellectual snobbery in appearing to suggest that entertainment and silly diversion has no place in the midst of international crisis. That is not my contention. Indeed, we are nearly always in some international crisis, or other, and people—ALL people, virtually—need diversion from the horrors that face us as members of the human race. We certainly cannot reasonably be expected to devote all of our waking hours to consideration of the horrors of Darfur or the likelihood of a viable nuclear capability in the hands of Pyongyang. That way, of course, lies madness. No, we need Desperate Housewives. We must have Entertainment Tonight. And the goings-on of Scientologist cum Philosopher Tom Cruise as well as the canoodlings of the moment by Lindsay Lohan and her partying in the "boite de jour" with her Mom (am I the ONLY one who finds that more than mildly disturbing?) are of inestimable importance to our national consciousness.

But even allowing for all that, the question remains: why is the public largely apparently indifferent to the invasion of its constitutional liberties? Is it ignorance? Cynicism? Or worse, have we, by silence, tacitly consented to a fundamental shift in our relationship with our government as the payment for the perception (valid or not) of greater personal and national security. I would like to think that ignorance is the culprit, simply because that cause is most readily remedied by a concentration of concerned individuals screaming loudly enough to be heard above the fray of: "would you like fries with that?" Cynicism is a tougher nut to crack, suggesting, as it does, that people have considered the problem, to a greater or lesser extent, but feel themselves so disenfranchised and removed from the scions of power that any efforts would surely prove fruitless. The consent argument is most troubling of all, because it implies that those principles for which our founding fathers bled, and upon which this country stands, are really not very important to us, at least not at the moment the chips are down.

There are, to be sure, legitimate arguments for encroachments upon liberties in times of war. Every schoolchild knows (or would know, if our schools were doing their job) that good old Abe Lincoln suspended the writ of habeas corpus for a time during the Civil War. Parenthetically, the rectitude of that action is still a subject of great debate among historians and constitutional scholars. Japanese-Americans were sent to concentration camps after Pearl Harbor (there's not much debate about the moral defensibility of that action). And now, of course, we have issues such as the various provisions of the Patriot Act, the prospect of secret military tribunals, domestic spying and indefinite detention without trial at "Gitmo." Are all these things a clear and present danger, per se, to our freedoms which must be fiercely resisted? Not necessarily. It should be pretty obvious to most people that military activities cannot be prosecuted effectively without a high level of secrecy. Interrogation of enemy operatives, especially in the terror milieu of the Middle East, cannot be accomplished entirely according to the Marquis of Queensbury Rules (there is, of course, a large gulf between fully according due process to enemy combatants and engaging in outright torture, notwithstanding the arguments of the "slippery slope-ists").

No, my objection is to the lack of open discussion of these issues. It may be that national security requires that everyone open their bags for inspection as they enter the New York City Subways. It is a debatable proposition whether ethnic profiling for air travelers ought to be a tool available to law enforcement. It may be uncomfortable for some to hear, but it is nevertheless a fact that the horrors of September 11 were perpetrated by Arab Muslims, as has most (not all, to be sure) international terrorism in recent years. Our population needs to be protected by its government and military. Our borders need to be secure (we're certainly doing a pretty poor job on that front). But the point is that these subjects need to be discussed, debated and yes, screamed about in the public domain, on the street, on blog sites, and around the office water coolers. Most of what I hear in those precincts concerns the latest episode of The Sopranos. (Not that the charms of that show are lost on me. Indeed, I have not missed a single episode of the five or six seasons of that show since it began airing some 27 years ago).

Long ago, we gave up any real right to privacy in this country. Madison Avenue saw to that, with its wholesale trading of customer lists and accompanying marketing data. What little was left was taken by the credit card companies, the internet and spammers. Commercial television ads for heated K-Y Jelly suggesting that we "see where it leads" followed by a knowing wink, have certainly removed what very little was left of the surprise and mystery of the bedroom for those of us who have not already been bombarded by internet porn over the last few years.

What, then, is left to us? Some of our allegedly constitutionally protected rights devolve from the implied right to privacy, to be found in the Bill of Rights. These include reproductive rights and, in recent years, newly "discovered" rights concerning sexual conduct. We still have some protections under the Fourth Amendment against unreasonable searches and seizures, but domestic spying is a potential threat to that. Do we want to do anything about that? Up to now, America's answer has been.....silence. Other provisions of the Bill of Rights give us the right to counsel and trial by jury as well as the right to confront our accusers. Secret military tribunals put those rights at risk. Should we care? Do we care? Survey says???........{Yawn}. Maybe our national security and defense do, indeed, demand the sacrifice of these rights. Maybe not. But the prospect of losing what little we have left of our Constitutional legacy because we are asleep at the switch is a horrifying proposition, to say the least. If we are going to cede these rights to our government in the name of safety and security, we ought to do so consciously. Security and freedom have always worked in inverse proportion. This is basic and self-evident. It has always been the fundamental mission of this Republic to find the ideal balance. I am sorely afraid, however, that we have stopped looking for it. There are a few (very few) people who seem to care. Unfortunately, and embarrassingly to me, personally, they are overwhelmingly to be found on the left. During the 2004 Presidential Election, when President Bush was making campaign appearances, there were, not surprisingly, anti-Bush demonstrators at most major venues. The security people assigned to the campaign designated so-called "free-speech" zones, usually many blocks from the site at which the President was to appear. In the most quotable line in many years, in this writer's opinion, a woman (to whom I apologize for not knowing her name and thus, not being able to attribute the quote), said: "I thought this WHOLE COUNTRY was a "free speech zone!""

Alas, however, those sentiments are few and far between. And regardless of whether we vigorously support or actively oppose the foreign policy of this Administration, we have a profound duty to ourselves, our children and our national legacy, to exercise that atrophied muscle we call "freedom of speech" and publicly, and in the harsh light of day, examine what price we are willing to pay in order to keep it, together with the other liberties we routinely take for granted.

Where is the outrage, people?
