If you have heard about the professional independent minor league baseball teams and leagues, sometimes called the "indy leagues", then you may have wondered why you should pay attention to them.  Since the leagues are not affiliated with the Minor League Baseball teams, many people dismiss these leagues and teams without much thought.  

Here are four reasons why you should pay attention to independent baseball:

First, independent baseball virtually guarantees that fans get something which they claim to want for a long time:  seeing professional athletes who make less than the fans do!  The players rarely receive any money during the off-season, and most have to work jobs from September through April in order to have the ability to play during the summer.  Many people do not know this, but a Major League superstar making million a year oftentimes makes more per game than the entire season's player payroll of an independent baseball team!  

Since many players in independent baseball get signed to contracts with affiliated Minor League teams, the perceived discrepancy in talent is not as wide as many may think.  This means that fans get to see quality professional baseball at a great price and have the opportunity to cheer for the underdog player who may have been overlooked.  Over 30 players who have MLB experience started their pro careers in the independent leagues, having never been signed to a Minor League contract before throwing their first professional pitch or at bat.  Kevin Millar and Chris Coste are just two examples of players whose careers started in the independent leagues.

Second, you may want to consider following independent baseball because you get to see players who truly play for the love of the game.  An "insider's secret" about professional baseball is that there are many guys sitting at home who, after a few weeks of getting in shape, could play in the independent leagues.  Whether the guys are beginning careers, families, have legal concerns, nagging injuries, or simply didn't have the funds to travel to several tryouts, they are not in uniform for one reason or another.  Many times, however, a player will not play because he believes - oftentimes incorrectly - that he is "worth more money" than what an independent team is paying.

This means that fans get to see players who genuinely care about playing baseball regardless of the financial situation.  The other benefit is that many independent leagues, depending on your geography, often offer a caliber of play which is superior to a lower-level affiliated team.  This claim is justified by looking at the rosters of several independent baseball teams which have lots of former Major Leaguers and Triple-A players.  Odds are that they would beat many "rookie" teams and other lower-level teams simply due to their physical maturity and level of professional playing experience.  Again, this means that fans get terrific baseball at a great price.

Finally, consider following independent baseball because you get to see former Major Leaguers who are managing these teams.  During the 2009 season there were at least 20 independent baseball team managers and coaches with Major League playing experience.  Many of these managers sign autographs, share stories with fans at games, and pass along some tremendous knowledge to their players.  Their experience lends credibility to the independent baseball industry and gives the fans reassurance that they are watching quality baseball.

The next time you read a story about an independent baseball team hopefully you will have a greater appreciation for the players and managers.  Should you have the opportunity to attend an independent league game then be sure to enjoy your time at the game and remember that you will be seeing some terrific baseball.

What I Know and Rember About Baseball - Glove Selection

With current players; Gloves are designed to last 1 season. $50 - $75 of annual frustration. The love of the glove is not the same. Disposable tool for a generation proclaiming recycling. Its just beyond my consideration.

As a parent, finances are substantially different then when I was growing up. I tend to save my money and buy the best of what I need. This goes for my kids as well. I have no qualms about getting the better end of what is available for their needs. My oldest on a whim decided to try out for a select baseball team and playing up a year. To my amazement they took him, but the backyard glove I'd taught him with would not be sufficient for the rigors he was to encounter. So, no problem, just find a good glove for a left hander. WHAT A JOKE! I went to over a dozen stores and looked through hundreds of gloves. I soon discovered that gloves go on sale in January when the shipments come in and the best selection is available. May is for good sales on what is already left over from the current year. Add to this that all sporting goods buyers believe that less than 1% of all players are left handed and 100% need a glove 12" or larger and you are hard pressed to get something age appropriate. Finally, not all gloves available for right hand throws are available for left hand throws. Seems the makers also feel that left hand throwers only need the larger gloves as well. As market conditions have virtually wiped out the mom and pop sporting goods dealers in my area, box stores that have taken over have little to no ability to special order anything. If you do, its full MSRP + shipping + handling, +, +, annoying. The final selection seemed to have all the credentials, good brand name, endorsed by the Little League king himself, a little large, but small enough hand pocket to keep it in place, $60. Game ready and good pocket. Within 6 weeks I was tightening up the laces, after 14 weeks, the outside finger area had broken down. Glove performance was poor and frustration was gaining speed. My player was loosing faith in his gloves ability to protect himself from the ball. My faith in this selection for him was also lost.

So, off to the internet. Find a suitable replacement that I don't need to re-purchase every year. East Bay, Just Gloves and Sports Diamond dominate the google and yahoo searches. All styles of the 3 majors (Rawlings, Wilson, Louisville) are there plus some of the up and comers (Nokoma, SSK, Nike, Reebok, etc ) but how do you justify a $89 glove to a $350 one. How does one determine the upper youth model will give more than 1 season. Back to the internet to search owner comments and the individual pieces that make up a glove. Steerhide, that's the ticket. Its generally thicker and the majors only use it in there most premium gloves. Even the up and comers reserve Steerhide for their top of the line gear. Do I recommend handing a $350+ glove to a 9yr old, no. Can I justify $120, well, compared to the prospect of spending $60 each year, if I get 2 years out of $120 it's a break even. If he can keep it all through high school, then all the better. So where did I find a steerhide glove that met all my criteria, nw.kelleyusa.com . These guys have just what you need for the price that is extremely right. They are a small company that offers direct pricing and distributorships. So, shrewd as I can be, I bought a distributorship and the mandatory inventory. I rationalized this by the fact I can get their best stuff at an even better price and at the very worst, give it away to the players we have in the family. I was very pleased with all the gloves they sent. Everything delivered as promised. The recurring proof for me is when I attend shows and young teenagers arrive at my table with their Dads and attest "this is just as good as the (brand x) we have been looking at and half the price!". That seals it for me. These guys spend hundreds if not thousands of hours reading, examining, touching gloves from every source they can find. To see so much enthusiasm just moments after introduction, it truly re-enforces my belief in these gloves.

Better gloves solve several problems;

1) they last longer

2) you only have to break them in once

3) annualized return on dollars spent is greater

4) you get a lifetime of baseball memories attached to one very personal glove.

So, is $120 a good price to pay? I say yes!

1) Take the club with your top hand and place the handle diagonally from the top join of your index finger down through your palm and  a  few centimetres higher than the your wrist (little finger side). Now wrap your hand around the club. Your thumb should be resting on top of the club.

2) You now have two choices (the most popular grip techniques) - the interlock grip or the overlay grip. First of all rest your bottom hand on top of the thumb of your top hand - use the lifeline on your bottom hand as the point at which you place it. At this point you can either rest your little finger of your bottom hand on the index finger of the top hand, or, interlock the same two fingers. Try both out and see which is more comfortable for you. Neither is better than the other but you want a feeling of unity so that you feel you can control the club.

3) Now you may need some slight adjusting of both hands. Locate the ‘v’ between your thumb and index finger on both hands.  They are upside down as you look at them - have the point of the v on both hands point toward your chin.

4) The importance of point two is that you can alter the type of shot you create depending upon the position of these v’s. The further toward your back shoulder you point them the ‘stronger’ your grip is and the more knuckles you will see on your left hand. This can help create more distance but has been known to add more slice. The opposite tends to reduce distance and create more of a hook. More advanced players play around with this to help fashion fade or draw shots. Be aware of these factors and play around with this to see what suits your game.

5) The correct golf grip is not complete without applying the right amount of pressure. It is too tempting to really grab hold of a club and choke it to death - you’d think that would help you get more distance. Wrong. Tense muscles reduce the freedom and rhythm of your swing which is where real club head speed comes from. A well known analogy for the right pressure is to hold the club as if you were holding a small bird without trying to hurt it.

Use these pointers as the basis of a solid and correct golf grip. If you’ve been gripping it any old way then you will notice a big difference in your play and will become a better golfer for it.

A Look at the Different Types of Baseball Gloves

Baseball Gloves are great gifts. A baseball player who is right handed will wear a glove on his left hand while a left handed baseball player will do vice versa.

It is the pattern of the glove which decides the shape and size of the baseball glove. And there are different types of baseball gloves like Catcher's Mitts, First baseman's Mitts, Infielder's mitts, Pitcher's gloves, Outfielder's gloves.

Step 1: Start by letting your arms hang down freely. There should be no tension in your arms. Place your hands on either side of the grip with your palms facing one another.

Step 2: Next, feed the club in your left hand so that the grip of the club runs diagonally from the first joint of your forefinger up into the fleshy pad at the top of your palm. Then all you have to do is close your fingers around the grip

Step 3: You should ensure that your left thumb is positioned on top of the grip slightly right of centre and that when you look down at your left hand only two knuckles should be visible.

Step 4: Now you have to add your right hand to the grip. It is very important to keep the palms-facing principle in mind when doing so. Bring your right hand towards the grip and fit it snugly on top of the left hand by wrapping your right fingers around the grip and interlocking your right forefinger and left pinkie. When this is done your right thumb and forefinger should form a soft trigger around the grip.

That is all there is to it. All you have to do now is hit the ball.

Scientifically speaking, scissors are an instrument with a functioning 2-lever system with a fulcrum in the middle. Where the scissors is held that is, the blade corners, force is applied there with the hands. The 2-lever apparatus exerts pressure in the middle where the fulcrum lies. The closer the material (to be cut) to the fulcrum, the easier it is to cut. This is because less force is required by the hand and the thumb.

One can say that a pair of scissors is actually composed of a pair of knives attached to each other. A single knife has one blade, whereas scissors have a pair of blades. Bigger scissors are called shears, in which the blades are of higher length and are usually for cutting heavy materials, plants or metal.

Truman Capote said "I believe more in the scissors than I do in the pencil", meaning that scissors are perhaps one of the most essential home tools people can use in their regular lives.

You probably can not name a household that does not have at least a pair of scissors. If you do, then the people of that house either are too ancient or there is a phobia attached to this tool.

It is a tool that is the easiest to use since it has a way to exert minimum pressure to cut through materials. There are innumerable uses of scissors like cutting paper, cloth, tin foil, hair, strings, plastic, leafy vegetables, etc.

Which brings me to the main point of this article. The question is: Are left-handed and right-handed scissors different?

The answer is "Yes." It is actually difficult for two people to share a pair of scissors if one is a right-handed and the other a left-handed. Because the thumb exerts pressure on the blade that is above and the rest of the fingers hold the other blade end to support that pressure. This is true for a normal scissors but in case of a scissors made for a left-handed person the reverse is true. The two blades in the scissors are different and their placements in the two types of scissors for two differently oriented persons will differ in just the vice versa way.

Though commonly it is found in a household that a scissors for right-handed a person is generally used and if a member is left-handed, he usually practices to use the same right handed scissors. But scissors made for the left hand are optimized for that position and are recommended for those that do cutting everyday.

In the present day's context a variety of soft touch scissors are used that enable you to cut material with a minimum of pressure.

There is another with a spring mechanism where the user does not open the blades apart to hold the material. It automatically opens and the user only has to exert pressure to cut. Scissors like this, and especially with rubber handles, are easy on the fingers of the user.

There are a variety of scissors that are optimized for their inteded use:

1. Children's Scissors are the safety scissors with almost blunt blades. If your children use these scissors, then their safety is ensured.

2. Medical or bandage scissors are used in hospitals and nursing homes. They have long handles with shorter blades. One of the blades is generally blunt and supports the cutting action of the other.

3. During operations, surgeons use another kind of blade, known as Hemostat. Instead of 2-blades system it has a one clamp and a one blade system.

4. Cutting cloth require very sharp bladed scissors. They are called fabric scissors. Such scissors are sharpened regularly, as even a little bit of bluntness will lead to irregular cuts on the fabric.

5. Gardeners use a type of scissors called the secateur. It is used to cut shrubs, and other plants. Another name for the secateur is "pruning shears."

6. Scissors having zigzag shaped blades are called pinking shears. They form a similar, decorative zig-zag type of cut shape on the material being cut.

7. There are a number of other scissors used in commercial industries as bolt cutters, tin snips, nippers, etc.

So the main thing is to get the right scissors for your need and for the correct hand that you use.

The only way to get better at anything is practice. But it also has to be the right kind of practice. If you really want to be good, you'll need to practice every day.

Start basic. Practice dribbling with your head up and don't worry about running full speed, until you can safely control the ball..

Do each ball handling drill with your left hand and with your right hand. Be sure to keep your head up and don't "stand up" out of an athletic position.

One of my favorite drills is the wall dribble. Standing with your body facing perpendicularly to the wall, and with the ball roughly an arms length from the wall begin to dribble against the wall, moving closer and changing speeds (and hands). Its a lot easier if you do a set of 5-10 a time, rotating hands each set.

The figure eight dribble is always a great way to use both hands.

When you're really good, you can dribble two balls with your head up, bringing the ball gradually closer to the ground, doing crossovers and dribbling behind your back (all with your head up).

The process of changing a cars primary driving parts from one side to another requires a conversion kit and someone knowledgeable enough about conversions to implement them. Another option is to contact a specialist dealer to acquire a left hand drive car. It is more expensive to purchase cars that drive on the opposite side of the traffic flow no matter where you go. One reason is because it is harder to sell over the correct driving side models. What are Diamonds?

Did you ever wonder about diamonds? Where diamonds come from? What makes a diamond so special? Or how diamonds are formed?

Diamonds are a mineral, a natural crystalline substance, the transparent form of pure carbon or nearly pure carbon. Diamonds have extraordinary qualities. Diamonds have a broad colour range, high refraction, high dispersion of fire, very low reactivity to chemicals, rarity, and of course, extreme hardness and durability. Diamonds are known as the "king of gems" they glitter, dazzle, and symbolize purity and strength.

A diamond is the oldest thing you will ever own, probably 3 billion years in age, fully two thirds the age of the Earth. A diamond is a strategic and high-tech supermaterial for our technological society. Diamond is the birth stone for the month of April.

A diamond is composed of the single element carbon, and it is the arrangement of the C atoms in the lattice that give a diamond its amazing properties. Both diamond and graphite are composed of just carbon. However a diamond is the hardest known material and graphite is one of the softest, this was caused by a rearrangement of the way the atoms are bonded together. Diamond carbon atoms are linked in a regular three-dimensional lattice with a repeating or crystalline pattern.

Diamond belongs to the cubic, or 'isometric' crystal system. The most commonly seen crystal structures or arrangements are:

• Octahedron (8 faces)

• Cube (6 faces)

• Dodecahedron (12 faces)

A diamond is the ultimate gemstone, having few weaknesses and many strengths. It is well known that diamonds are the hardest substance found in nature, but few people realize that diamonds are four times harder than the next hardest natural mineral, corundum - sapphires and rubies.

Natural diamonds are formed deep within the Earth's mantle layer from the element carbon, about 180km below the surface, where high temperatures and pressures exist. Some diamonds form at depths of 300-400 kilometres, or even deeper, but these diamonds are particularly rare.

The earths mantel is made up of molten rock, metals and other materials. The temperature is very high at this depth - between 1100 degC and 1400 degC. The high pressures needed to form diamonds are produced by the weight of 180km of rocks pressing down. Besides carbon, there are very small amounts of other substances, such as nitrogen and sulfur that can become trapped in the crystal when it is formed in the mantel. These impurities can give color to the diamond. One of the most rare is pink diamonds.

Natural diamonds are classified by the type and level of impurities found within them.

• Type Ia diamond - Most natural diamonds are of this type, which contain up to 0.3% nitrogen.

• Type Ib diamond - Very rare (~0.1%) in nature, but almost all synthetic (industrial) diamonds are of this type. They contain nitrogen at concentrations of up to 500 ppm.

• Type IIa diamond - Very rare in nature, these diamonds contain so little nitrogen that it can't be easily detected by the usual IR or UV absorption measurements.

• Type IIb diamond - Extremely rare in nature. These have such a low concentration of nitrogen (even lower than type IIa) that the crystal is a p-type semiconductor (due to uncompensated B acceptor impurities).

Due to its unique internal structure and powers of light reflection, when cut to proper proportions, diamonds gather light within itself and then sends it back in a shower of fire and brilliance. The life of a polished diamond is regarded as the amount of light that is reflected back to the viewer. The term life is also referred to as brilliance. If the diamond is cut with good proportions then the brilliance will be increased. Lustre refers to the surface gloss on a polished diamond. Fire the play of colours that can be seen from the crown of a polished diamond. As light enters the diamond it is refracted and broken up into the colours of the spectrum and reflected back. The resulting rainbow-like colour flashes are called fire.

The hardness of diamond is an important property. As an industrial tool it has many uses and modern industry is highly dependent upon it. As a gemstone, it is resistant to scratching and abrasion, which ensures that a finished gem will retain its brilliance and polish. Because of its hardness and the unique way in which it is manufactured, a diamond polishes very slowly. It forms an unusually flat, finely-polished adamantine surface, with very sharp, straight edges between facets. No other gemstone can quite match this standard of polish.

Diamond has the highest coefficient of thermal conductivity of any known substance because the closely-packed crystal structure conducts heat very quickly. The thermal conductivity of diamond is five times higher than that of copper. This explains why a diamond feels cold to the touch when first picked up but quickly becomes warm from the heat of your fingers.

Only about one-fifth of all mined diamonds could be considered of gem quality. From 40 to 250 tons of gravel and sand must be processed today to recover one rough diamond from the world's thinning diamond deposits. Experts estimate that all known supplies of diamonds will be depleted within 30 to 40 years. 75 - 80% of all diamonds mined are used for industrial applications such as drilling, grinding, or sawing. The remainder are used for jewellery or investment. Less than 2% of the diamonds mined are of such high quality that they may be considered investment quality.

On average, 250 tons of ore must be mined and processed to produce a one carat diamond of gem quality. When the mining operation is completed, sorters look at rough diamonds, separating them into small piles by shape, size, and quality, a long and laborious process.

The earliest examples of diamonds in human hands were found 3,000 years ago, in India. There, diamonds were used primarily as talismans to ward off evil and protect the wearer in battle. Diamonds were also used by the early Chinese, Greeks, and Romans as an engraving tool. While there was some mystique surrounding diamonds because they were so rare and difficult to obtain-many early cultures believed they had magical properties

The word diamond comes from the Greek word "adamas" meaning unconquerable, in reference to the eternity of love. In 1477, Archduke Maximilian of Austria gave a diamond ring to Mary of Burgundy, thus, starting the tradition of diamond engagement rings. The reason a woman wears an engagement ring on her third finger of her left hand dates back to the Egyptian belief that the vena amoris (vein of love) ran directly from the heart to the top of that finger.

Many of the rarest diamonds occur by rare accidents of nature in shades of pink, blue, green, amber, or even red. These diamonds are referred to as Fancy diamonds and are evaluated by a different set of color standards. Fancy diamonds are the most expensive due to their extreme rarity.

My batting gloves have something in them that hurts my left hand thumb?

i have the rawlings workhorse 1050T and inside in between my pointer finger and my thumb there is a little ball like a knot that bothers me when i swing, if i cut it im pretty sure the glove will fall apart. I tried rubbing some cocoa butter on it to soften it up maybe it will but idk what to do because these are really great gloves otherwise.

i know same happened to me[different gloves] i bought new ones

2006 Philadelphia Phillies Preview

The Philadelphia Phillies remained right on the Braves heels for most of the 2005 season thanks to a potent batting order that included 2nd basemen Chase Utley (.291 28 105), and outfielder's Pat Burrell (.281 32 117) and Bobby Abreu (.286 24 102). Shortstop Jimmy Rollins (.290 12 54) and veteran catcher Mike Lieberthal (.263 12 47) also contributed to provide the Phillies with a well-balanced lineup. Perhaps the biggest offensive surprise was the emergence of rookie 1st baseman Ryan Howard (.288 22 63) who stepped in to replace the inured power hitting Jim Thome. Howard hit an impressive .298 mark after the all star break, launching 19 homeruns while playing in 67 games. His .323 batting average against righties helped keep the Phillies close and landed Howard National League Rookie of the Year. The Phillies ended the 2005 season with a respectable 88-74 record, finishing 2 games behind the Eastern Division leading Atlanta Braves. Philadelphia finished second in the National League with a team batting average of .270 (eighth in MLB).

The Phillies 2005 pitching was led by newly acquired Jon Lieber (17-13 4.20) who was picked up from the Yankees in the 2004 off season. Lieber posted only an 8-8 record prior to the all star break but rebounded nicely with a 9-5 record in the second half of the season and a 3.28 ERA. Joining Lieber in the rotation were starters Brett Myers (13-8 3.72), Randy Wolf (6-4 4.39), Vicente Padilla (9-12 4.71 and rookie pitcher Robinson Tejeda (4-3 3.57). Workhorse closer Billy Wagner (4-3 1.51 38 saves in 41 save opportunities) appeared in 75 games posting a microscopic 0.74 ERA in 36.1 innings pitched after the all star break.

Off Season Moves:

The Phillies acquired veteran reliever Arthur Rhodes (3-1 2.08) from the Indians for outfielder Jason Michaels to help their 2006 bullpen. Philadelphia also moved often injured 1st baseman Jim Thome (.207 7 30 RBI in 59 games) to make room for rookie sensation Ryan Howard. Aaron Rowand (.270 13 69) was picked up from the White Sox in the trade for Thome. Vicente Padilla was also moved for relief pitcher Ricardo Rodriguez (2-3 5.53) while starters Ryan Franklin (8-15 5.10) and journeyman reliever Tom Gordon (5-4 2.57) were acquired via free agency.

2006 Analysis:

The Phillies will enter the 2006 season with a potent lineup. Picking up Rowand in exchange for Thome will add to an already stacked batting order. Rowand is slated to replace free agent outfielder Kenny Lofton in centerfield. The Phillies will also be looking to build on Chase Utley and Ryan Howard's breakout seasons. Abreu was included in the trade rumor mill all off-season but it appears he will be staying in Philadelphia. Abreu is a steady often-underrated competitor, playing in all 162 games last year. Expect the offense to be even better in 2006 with Howard playing a full season.

The Phillies are most concerned about their pitching. The team lost free agent closer Billy Wagner to the Mets, and reliever Terry Adams to Pittsburgh. Vincente Padilla was also traded to Texas and it appears Urbina may not be pitching at all in 2006. Lieber, Lidle and Myers should continue their 2005 form in 2006 although the 4th and 5th starters are very weak. Reliever Tom Gordon has some very big shoes to fill with the departure of Wagner. Gordon hasn't managed to hold down the closer role since 2001 with the Chicago Cubs. Expect the Phillies lineup to dominate the NL and the top 3 pitchers to do well. The bullpen is shaky, but Philadelphia should contend for the East with a strong offensive attack.

What are good exercises for a stronger softball swing?

I'm in an adult mens league and was wondering if anyone had any tips on what could help me get some more power. I'm left handed and there's a fairly short fence in right field (220 ft), but its slow pitch and we use wooden bats so you need some decent muscle to get it out.

Questions about slow pitch softball will not be answered.

I play one day a week, and yes the games are a full nine innings and close to three hours long. It's still less than a round of golf a week.

History of Softball

The history of softball is by far the clearest of all documented sports related histories. Meaning that football history, soccer and golf among other sports all have much more convoluted beginnings compared to softball history. It is a relatively young sport that was originated in Chicago in 1887. The story has it that after receiving the score of the Yale and Harvard football game that a group of young men jumped up and one young man threw a boxing glove at another who proceeded to hit it with a pole. George Hancock who is often credited with creating the game then drew out a diamond on the floor and took the handle of a broom to use as a stick. They tied more boxing gloves up to be used as an oversized ball. Suffice that it is odd to say that softball history originated indoors and was developed by men. The original game was loosely based on a shortened version of baseball with a smaller field and a larger ball. Shortly after this Mr. Hancock painted permanent lines in the gymnasium, prepared some new rules and coined the sport indoor baseball.

Softball history’s popularity grew rapidly and Hancock then formed a publication on all of the rules of the game. Canada adopted the sport as it was easy to play indoors. Then the game took a turn on the outdoor fields in the summer and was called indoors/outdoors.

Different teams and leagues began to grow all over the northeast. Chicago while credited with the development saw teams popping up in Minnesota, New York and Massachusetts. Then the great gold rush took easterners west to gain riches and along with them they brought there sports, which helped develop the west coasts teams.

Women’s softball was also developed in Chicago and West Division High was the first to have a team in 1895. They played mostly indoors and were not initially recognized as comparable to the men. It took the women’s leagues much longer to gain credibility and the real crossover was the growth in popularity of baseball. As baseball became much more popular the male players shifted to it while the women began to make softball there own. Now a day’s both men and women of all ages can enjoy the sport.

Throughout the 1900’s leagues and tournaments began to pop up everywhere. The National Championship was first played in Chicago in 1933 and it included both male and female competitors. The sixties and seventies saw professional leagues come and go for women. The slow pitch game evolved on the international level with the Softball World Championships in 1965. It ultimately set the platform for the Olympics which greatly improved softball history. The game began to shift as players became much bigger and stronger and less pitching and defense were incorporated. The officials and high ranking decision makers of the leagues around the world began to make a shift to fast pitch softball beginning around the 1980’s and 90’s. At first the changes were met with much resistance but the game has since embraced the changes.

Fast pitch has altered the appearance of the game dramatically. The sport is much more a game of speed and defense rather than offense and power and it has also produced much more media coverage and growth in the sport than ever.

The game of softball is appealing to so many levels of our society. Young men and women can enjoy the game on either a social or competitive level. The thousands of softball leagues around the country provide for a great social backdrop. College teams flourish and the international scene is more popular than ever. Softball history has come such a long way in the last hundred years from poles and boxing gloves to international notoriety, so goes the history of softball.

History of use of baseball glove

A baseball glove or mitt is a large leather glove that baseball players on the defending team are allowed to wear to assist them in catching and fielding balls hit by a batter, or thrown by a teammate.

Early baseball was a game played without gloves. During the slow transition to gloves, a player who continued to play without one was called a barehanded catcher. This did not refer to the position of Catcher, but rather to the practice of catching with bare hands. The earliest glove was not webbed and not particularly well suited for catching, but was used more to bat a ball to the ground so that it could be picked up. No doubt this lack of functionality contributed to the early resistance to the glove.

One of the first players believed to use a baseball glove was Doug Allison, a catcher for the Cincinnati Red Stockings, in 1870, due to an injured left hand.[1] The first documented story of glove use concerns Charles Waitt, a St. Louis outfielder/first baseman who in 1875 donned a pair of flesh-colored gloves. While glove usage was not accepted by all players at first, being considered "sissy" by many, it slowly caught on as more and more players began using different forms of gloves. "We used no mattress on our hands, No cage upon our face; We stood right up and caught the ball, With courage and with grace."[2] That was the typical reaction from the "old-time" players when the gloves were first introduced.

Many early baseball gloves were simple leather gloves with the fingertips cut off, supposedly to allow for the same control of a bare hand, but with extra padding. The adoption of the baseball glove by baseball star Albert Spalding when he began playing first base influenced more infielders to begin using gloves. By the mid 1890s, it was the norm for players to wear gloves in the field.

It was an ironic fate for Spalding, as he once was skeptical to don the new glove in baseball, but then rose to the occasion and did it. He afterwards created the sporting goods empire known as Spalding Since their beginnings, baseball gloves have grown. While catching in baseball had always been two handed, eventually, gloves grew to a size that made it easier to catch the ball in the webbing of the glove, and use the off-hand to keep it from falling out.

A glove is typically worn on the non-dominant hand, leaving the dominant hand for throwing the ball; for example, a right-handed player would wear a glove on the left hand. By convention, the type of glove that fits on the left hand is called a "right-handed" or "RH" glove. The shape and size of the baseball gloves is governed by official baseball rules; Section 1.00, Objectives of the Game, defines limits of catcher's, first baseman's and fielder's glove in parts 1.12, 1.13 and 1.14.

Baseball players: Do you prefer sliding feet first or head first?

And also why do you prefer one or the other? Do you only slide fleet or head first under certain circumstances?

it depends on the situation. If your going into 2nd or 3rd it doesn't really matter for me unless I am planning a pop up slide. If I was I obviously had to go feet first. If I was sliding into home I always go feet first because if i went head first i had a good chance of breaking my shoulder or hand on the catchers equipment

You are standing in a sports store, looking at the display of baseball gloves. Different colors, leathers, name brands and designs meet your eye as you glaze over. Where to start?

Let's start with an easy question: do you catch with your right hand or left? I catch with my left and throw with my right, so I am looking for a form-fitting baseball glove for my left hand. It shouldn't feel loose enough to fall off, nor should it be so tight I would have to really pull to remove it. Once you've determined the hand your baseball glove is for you can work with more specific guidelines.

There are baseball gloves available for different positions, for example a catcher's glove is different from an outfielder's glove. It's possible you're just buying a couple of gloves to play some backyard catch with your kids, in which case you don't need to get specific. That also brings up another key point: price. As with most things in this world there is a large price range for baseball gloves that ranges from around $20 to $200 and beyond. For a game of catch you might want to spend a little less than you would for a glove being used in game situations. Children are more likely to outgrow their gloves as they get older, so you want to spend accordingly keeping in mind that next year probably means a new baseball glove.

Along with the practical you have some creative choices when buying a glove. Colors, brands, fit all available for your personal preference. Gloves come in all colors from black to red, different shades of brown, and some navy. The traditional glove is brown, however some people might like to express themselves with different colors while catching and throwing like a pro. There are powerful sports brands in stores today, but perhaps you'd rather pick a glove that is personally endorsed by a professional player. Kids often pick sports figures as personal heroes, for them to play with a glove adorned with their favorite player's signature could have great meaning to them.

Lastly there's the way the glove fits you. As you slide your hand in you want it to feel molded with your fingers. You should be able to open and close your hand while wearing the baseball glove; however you do want a little bit of stiffness. Punch your free hand into the glove while you're wearing it; get a feel for the easiness of grip you will have while wearing it. Make sure you're its not going to fly off your hand if you swing your arm.
