You know when you read something and it sticks with you all day? The concept just gets stuck in your head and you can't get it out no matter what? And it angers you?
This concept of "floating realignment" angers me. It may be the worst idea I've ever seen. Tom Verducci has the particulars:
As with most issues of competitive balance, floating realignment involves finding a work-around to the Boston-New York axis of power in the AL East.
One example of floating realignment, according to one insider, would work this way: Cleveland, which is rebuilding with a reduced payroll, could opt to leave the AL Central to play in the AL East. The Indians would benefit from an unbalanced schedule that would give them a total of 18 lucrative home dates against the Yankees and Red Sox instead of their current eight. A small or mid-market contender, such as Tampa Bay or Baltimore, could move to the AL Central to get a better crack at postseason play instead of continually fighting against the mega-payrolls of New York and Boston.
There would be some restrictions to the floating nature of things, including limiting teams to within a two time-zone range of its own. But the proposal suggests there could be swings in the number of teams in certain divisions from year to year and even differing numbers of teams in the American and National Leagues.
Worst. Idea. Ever.
This is just a cowardly way of avoiding the huge problem in Major League Baseball: a salary cap. Failing the passage of a cap, which will never happen if the MLBPA or certain ownership groups have anything to say about it (note: they do), they could rectify part of this problem by constructing a solid salary floor and potentially developing an even more widespread revenue sharing plan.
Going back to Verducci's example, how can Cleveland sell to their fans that they don't expect to be competitive some years, then expect the fans to come out to watch them play? Hey fans, we're going to lose anyway, so wouldn't you rather see us lose to the Yankees and Red Sox? And how cowardly would it be for the Orioles, Rays or Blue Jays to have to leave the AL East just to make the playoffs, especially if and when either Boston or New York don't make it? And what happens when Cleveland thinks they are competitive again? Can they just go back to the AL Central and take back their traditional spot? Does the corresponding team have to switch back as well, or will it end up in five years that the AL East is just the Yankees playing the Red Sox and nobody else? And what happens if the Yankees or Red Sox decide to leave the division? Is that fair to the teams in, say the AL Central who now have to face them? Does allowing a team into a division go to a vote, like a backyard clubhouse? Should we just pick division captains who can pick the teams each year like we're playing a game of dodgeball? This is ludicrous.
If MLB wants to realign, it should realign geographically and be done with it. Get rid of the American and National Leagues already. And yes, I understand the only way to do that would be to either eliminate the DH (never going to happen) or make it mandatory in both leagues. As much as that pains my pitchers-should-have-to-hit sensibilities, the modern pitching staffs and benches and increasing specialization of the sport make it more likely that the NL will eventually adopt the DH anyway. Once the playing field is leveled, model your divisional structure like the NBA and separate the teams like this:
Atlantic League:
North Division – Cleveland, Detroit, Toronto, Milwaukee, Cincinnati
South Division – Baltimore, Tampa Bay, Atlanta, Florida, Washington
East Division – Boston, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh
Pacific League:
Midwest Division - Chicago Cubs, Chicago White Sox, Minnesota, St. Louis, Kansas City
Mountain Division – Arizona, Colorado, Houston, Seattle, Texas
West Division - Los Angeles Angels, Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland, San Diego, San Francisco
Obviously, the divisions could swap a few teams here or there, and if the names of the divisions – especially the "Mountain" – don't make sense, MLB could name them after Hall of Fame players. The Mays, Ruth, Gehrig, Aaron, Williams…you get the point.
Have the division winners make the playoffs and pull the two wildcard teams from all the remaining teams, not the next best in each league. Anything has to be better than what they're suggesting now. This floating idea...should sink.

Perhaps this is something Zach Galifianakis should have done before he took a razor to his signature beard on Saturday during his appearance on SNL. That beard was central to his identity and he wiped most of it out like it was nothing.
Red Sox first baseman Kevin Youkilis understands the value of facial hair. He's allowing fans to vote on one of four facial hair designs he could sport on Opening Day against the Yankees. There's his usual goatee, the Magnum P.I. mustache, the clean shaven look that is bizarre and bound to lose and the Fu Manchu (which would copy the Youk Manchu he grew last year for his official photo). A little limiting, if you ask me. Huge mutton chops and a soul patch deserve a right to compete.
Of course, frivolity can't exist for frivolity's sake, so there is a charity element to all this. In order to vote, a $1 donation has to be made to Youk's charity, Hits for Kids, which describes itself as "dedicated to rallying local and corporate support for charities and organizations focused on the health and wellbeing of children". Essentially, it's a charity for charities. Good to know. Either way, you're doing somebody some good and you potentially get to make a ballplayer look ridiculous.

why does Jed Lowrie of the Red Sox wear white batting gloves but have black ones in his back pocket?
his white gloves are used for hitting because he has pine tar on them to keep a firm grip on the bat and the blavk ones are strictly for baserunning. alot of players do this because if you slide with tar on your gloves they are basically ruined, the dirt cakes on the gloves and they are heavy and serve no purpose, alot of players have two sets of gloves because they dont want to cut up their hands when they slide into a base, but dont want to use the gloves that they hit with.

The Slayer skill gives you the ability to kill enemies that would otherwise be unharmed by your attacks, by using Slayer equipment and your experience in the skill. You can begin the Slayer skill at any time by speaking to any of the 5 Slayer Masters, located in different parts of the RuneScape world:
Turael - East of the bar in Burthorpe.
Mazchna - In the northeast corner of Canifis.
Vannaka - In the Edgeville Dungeon, east of the Wilderness gate.
Chaeldar - South of the entrance to the Lost City of Zanaris.
Duradel - Above the fishing shop in Shilo Village.
If you’re having trouble finding a Slayer Master, just look for the Slayer Icon on your map. It would also be wise to start off with the Slayer Master in Burthorpe, as he generally gives easier tasks than the others.
Training Slayer
To train your Slayer skill, you first need to get an assignment from one of the Slayer Masters as described above. They will tell you to kill a certain amount (no more than 200) of a kind of monster, and once you’ve defeated the required amount you can go back to your Slayer Master and get another assignment.
While on an assignment, you’ll receive experience only for defeating the type of monster that has been assigned to you. Killing other monsters that have not been assigned to you will not get you any Slayer experience. The amount of experience you receive from each kill is the same as the number of hitpoints the monster has. If two players attack the same monster, one causing the most damage and the other stiking the final blow, the experience will be split in half between each player.
Some Slayer monsters also require you to use a weapon or other item to defend against their attacks. Be sure to bring this item with you at all times during the assignment, and don’t attack Slayer monsters without the appropriate things or you may become overwhelmed and killed.
Slayer monsters drop many unique items that can only be obtained by killing them. These items include Black and White Mystic Robes, Armored Boots, Granite Maul, and the Abyssal Whip, as well as Clue Scrolls for Treasure Trails and assorted herbs.
Alternate Monsters
Sometimes your Slayer Master may be a bit vague as to the type of monster that he wants you to kill. He may generalize and say “Kalphites” or “Dragons,” which means that you can kill any monster of that type.
Kalphites - Kalphite Workers or Soldiers.
Dragons - Baby Blue or Red Dragons.
Wolves - White Wolf Mountain Wolves.
Shades - Various Shades found in Mort’ton.
The Enchanted Gem
In Slayer there is a lot of equipment available (details below), but none more necessary than the Enchanted Gem. The Enchanted Gem will enable you to contact the most matched slayer master to your combat level (Vannaka to those below combat level 70, Chaeldar to those between combat level 70 and 100 and Duradel from combat level 100+).
Once you activate the enchanted gem you have the following options
The two most important options are “How am I doing so far?” which will tell you which monster you are killing, and how many you have left to kill of it such as “You’re currently assigned to kill Cockatrice, only 85 more to go.” The other important option is “Got any tips for me?” Then your slayer master will tell you advice such as “Werewolves are feral creatures, they are strong and tough with sharp claws and teeth”
The other two options “Who are you?” and “Where are you?” are simple questions which let you find out who your slayer master is (not just the name) and where to find him or her to get tasks from them.
Changing Assignments
If you think that a certain assignment is too tough or too boring, you have the ability to change it for another random assignment. At the Burthorpe Slayer Master (Turael), you can change it by asking for a new one. However, there are two snags:
You cannot change Slayer assignments given by Turael.
You cannot change an assignment by another master if the current monster assignment is assigned from Turael’s list.
Slayer Masters
Each of the 5 Slayer Masters will give you an assignment with a different level of difficulty, depending on the master that you speak to. Some also have requirements before you are able to get an assignment from them.
Note: The following slayer task lists are by no means all-inclusive; they only detail the most common Slayer tasks.

We're a little over a quarter of the way through the major league baseball season, and like every season, there have some been some great stories and some sad tales so far. With Barry Bonds finally catching the Babe in home runs, we can now focus on the teams and the pennant races.
Detroit 'Stop' City
The biggest surprise in all of baseball has to be the Detroit Tigers. Heading into Tuesday's games, Detroit has the best record in the majors at 30-14, one game ahead of the defending world champions, the Chicago White Sox. The Tigers were expected to improve under new manager Jim Leyland, but no one could have predicted this kind of success.
Detroit will be in the race for the long haul because of their outstanding starting pitching. The Tigers' staff is leading everyone with a 3.26 ERA and 1.20 WHIP. Veteran Kenny Rogers has led by example in his first year in Motown. He's headed towards another all-star birth, posting a 7-2 record with a 2.91 ERA. Rookie Justin Verlander has been outstanding, winning 6 of his 9 starts including a 5-hit shutout of Kansas City on Monday night. Fourth-year pro Nate Robertson is 4-2 with a 3.03 ERA, and 23-year-old Jeremy Bonderman, who was expected to be the club's ace coming into the season, has a 1.14 WHIP and is averaging 8 strikeouts per 9 innings.
Angels Can't Get Out of the Infield
No American League team has been more disappointing than the Los Angeles Angels. Mired in last place in the AL West, only the anemic Royals have a worse record than the Angels. Their offense has been pathetic. They are dead last in the majors with a .299 on-base percentage and last in the AL in slugging percentage.
The only player hitting anywhere close to his average is Vladimir Guerrero. But the Angels have no one in the lineup to protect Guerrero, so teams have already started to pitch around the all-star outfielder. Los Angeles had a chance to acquire Manny Ramirez in the off-season, but decided the price tag was too high for the Red Sox slugger and went with unproven youngsters like Casey Kotchman, Robb Quinlan, and Dallas McPherson. They have combined for 2 HRs and 11 RBIs so far.
Return of the Big Red Machine
Over in the Senior Circuit, Cincinnati has gotten off to a Red-hot start. Cincinnati is hanging tight with St. Louis in the NL Central and would be the National League wild card representative if the season ended today.
The Reds have belted the second most home runs in the National League behind only the Brewers. Adam Dunn leads the team with 16 big flys, trailing only Albert Pujols, who is in a league of his own. Dunn and fellow 26-year-old outfielder Austin Kearns are both slugging over .500 and with the return of Ken Griffey Jr. to the lineup, Cincinnati's offense should continue to put up impressive numbers all season.
While the Reds' offense was expected to be good, not much was expected of the pitching. A March trade with the Red Sox changed all that, though. Cincinnati acquired Bronson Arroyo in the deal for outfielder Wily Mo Pena with the hopes that he would turn out to be the team's ace. Arroyo has not disappointed as he has an NL-leading 2.40 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP. He even blasted a home run in each of his first two starts. The rest of the Reds' staff has been average at best, however, and ultimately will be their downfall.
The Loveable Losers
In a position all too familiar to their long-suffering fans, the Chicago Cubs are struggling again. Like the Angels in the American League, the Cubs can point to their pitiful offensive output as the reason for their problems. Chicago is last in all of baseball with a .364 slugging percentage and their .301 on-base percentage ranks last in the NL.
Injuries have decimated the Cubs. Star pitchers Kerry Wood and Mark Prior have been out all season with shoulder injuries. Wood just returned but was tagged for 3 home runs in 5 innings in a loss against the light-hitting Washington Nationals in his first start of the season last week. Prior has just started throwing off the mound in his rehab assignment and the club hopes he can return to the majors in early June.Â
The other devastating injury to Chicago was to first baseman Derek Lee. Lee, who was a triple-crown contender last season, was off to another brilliant start batting .318 with 3 homers and 10 RBIs through 14 games. Lee is still in a cast after breaking his wrist and most likely won't be back until after the All-Star break. Even if the Cubs get all of their stars back from injury, don't bet on them making a run in the NL Central. They'll be too far back with not enough time left.
