How To Choose A New Fastpitch Softball Glove

There are many choices in Fastpitch Softball Gloves today. It can be very confusing to choose the best glove for you with all the sizes, styles, materials and models available today.
Fastpitch Softball Gloves generally have a larger pattern (length) than a baseball glove because the ball is larger. A deeper pocket is usually designed into a softball glove as well. The distance between the thumb and index finger is shorter to accommodate a smaller hand.

One important thing to know is that you should not buy a glove that your child can “grow into”. The glove needs to fit properly and be the proper length (this is usually called the Pattern size of the glove) to allow them to develop proper fielding mechanics and not cheat by having a longer glove. A proper fitting glove will also help the beginning player feel more confident because the glove is snug on the hand and easier to manage and won’t keep falling off.
Remember, a six or eight year old child has a pretty small hand and not as strong as those 14A level players on the next field over.

Let's start by deciding what Position you Normally play. This can help determine the size or pattern of the glove. Most kids will play several positions to start with so a Utility glove may be the best choice for beginners. Below is a quick view chart to get you started.

How To Measure a Glove

Fastpitch Softball Gloves and First Base Mitts are measured from the top of the index finger of the glove down along the inside of the pocket and out to the heal of the glove. Fastpitch gloves will typically measure from 12 inches to 14.5 inches with youth sizes being smaller.
You should use a flexible tape measure or a length of lace or string. This is so while measuring it can lay in the palm of the glove as it measures giving you an accurate measurement. Measure from the highest point of the index finger.

Catchers Mitts are measured around the circumference of the mitt. All gloves and mitts are measured in inches typically. A Fastpitch Softball Catchers Mitt will measure in the 33 inch to 34.5 inch range. Youth sizes can be smaller.

I still don’t understand what size my kid is! Parents of a beginning player can ask your coach, or have your child try on some of the other kid's gloves to see how they fit. Measure those gloves using the techniques above then look at the chart and read the rest of this article for more tips. Most gloves have the size labeled somewhere on the glove.

Fastpitch Softball Gloves don’t have to be expensive. Good quality gloves that will help your child learn the game and play well are available under $40. Gloves for the serious competitive player to college player can range from under $100 to over $200. So there is a lot of choice out there.

Oufielders: Normally, Fastpitch Softball Outfielders like a larger glove in the 12.5" to 14" pattern. This gives them a deeper pocket and a longer glove to snag that ball from going over the fence or diving to catch one with an outstretched arm. A longer glove makes ball transfer a little slower but the extra catching area is usually a plus for outfielders.
There are designs with open webs in an "H", a "T" and other patterns. This allows you to see the ball as you hold the glove out for a high fly. Closed web designs are also available for outfield use. Some players prefer the closed web to help block the sun.

Infielders: Generally, Fastpitch Softball Infielders prefer a smaller pattern,in the 12" to 12.5" range. This smaller size allows a quicker grab and quicker transfer of the ball to the throwing hand.
There are some new designs that are almost fingerless. These allow you to scoop up that ground ball even quicker.
Sometimes an infielder prefers an open web like the outfielders and sometimes they like them closed to provide more stopping power and control.

Pitchers Usually like a glove that has a closed web. This allows them to hide the ball longer in the glove. Pitchers sometimes like a longer pattern like an outfielder to hide the ball. There are Fastpitch Softball Pitchers gloves designed by professional players. These sometimes have features such as less lacing or no knots on the outside to protect the leg when they slap the glove against it on the release of the ball. I know, pitchers can be weird about things.

First Baseman Mitts are similar to a regular fielders glove but have more of a mitt shape to them. They don't have fingers, but instead have a thin but stiff pad that runs around the circumference of the glove. They are usually larger to help scoop up those "bad" throws. This larger size gives them more control to catch the softball with. There are still a lot of first basewomen that use a standard fielders glove also.
It is not required to use a First Base Mitt if you play first base but you can not use a First Base or Catchers Mitt at any other fielding position.

Catchers Mitts are probably the most specific and don't look much like the other gloves. They are kind of round in shape and are measured by the circumference of the mitt. Fastpitch Softball Catchers Mitts usually are in the 33" to 34.5" range. They sometimes have added or special palm padding to help with the sting of a really fast pitcher.
Today's Fastpitch Catchers mitt is larger and shallower than it used to be making it more flexible and similar to a First base mitt. This allows for quicker ball transfer, which is essential in this very quick game of Fastpitch Softball.

Web Styles:

Open Web gloves are typically preferred by the middle infielders, first basemen and some outfielders. This Open Web helps hold the ball better and allows you to transfer the ball quicker. These are Fastpitch Gloves with a "T" or "H" web design. There are many variations of these webs.

Closed Web gloves usually preferred by Pitchers, third and some outfielders allows the ball to be hidden from the batter and also gives better support when catching an outfield fly or line drive.
This web type basically means you can't see through it. These would be the "Beehive" or "Spiral Lock" type webs. There are many variations of these webs.

Open Back or Closed Back

Open Back gloves are usually a little cooler and lighter. They can be fitted more snugly on the wrist. There are different methods for adjusting the strap; Velcro and D-rings are common methods.

Closed Back gloves usually just have a hole for your index finger to slip through. Some have a Velcro strap or D-ring to help adjust the size and make it a more snug fit.

Most Fastpitch Softball gloves should be worn with a batting glove on the hand. This will help keep moisture from the inside of the glove. This can also help take the sting out of hard throws and adjust the fit of the glove. Change the batting glove if it becomes wet. Some leagues don't allow the pitcher to wear a batting glove. Supposedly it distracts the batter.

Materials

Most of today's gloves are made from a top-quality leather. There are some cheaper brands that use mostly synthetic materials. These are not going to last nearly as long as a quality leather glove but may be all you need at the moment.

A good quality Fastpitch Softball glove will be made of Steerhide, Cowhide, Buffalo hide, Kip leather (a younger or smaller steer), pigskins or other exotic animal hides.
Steerhide is generally the better material and it comes in several variations. Buffalo hide is good too but usually is much stiffer, so it requires a lot more break in. Manufacturers will tan the hide and give it brand names. This is a subject for another article.
Higher end, higher quality gloves usually are made from heavier leathers that help them last longer and perform differently and better.

Remember to take care of your new glove and it will take care of you on the field. Use only manufacturer suggested glove conditioners, if it gets wet then dry it with a towel and let it air dry – never use a hair dryer. Then you can apply a small amount of conditioner if necessary.
When the game is over, wipe the dirt from your glove and any excess moisture. Put a ball in the pocket and tie it with a length of pre-wrap just like you use to hold your hair back.

Getting To Know Louisville Slugger Softball Gloves

Several years ago, I was in search of a new softball glove. My old Wilson had worn out and was falling apart. I went to a neighbouring discount store to see what was accessible. I had waited until the final minute to find a glove and was kind of desperate. I found the Louisville Slugger and saw that it had a somewhat low price. I Want to Play Fastpitch Softball and Need to Get in Shape

I get asked quite often what kind of exercises to do to get in shape for softball. There are a lot of kids out there that want to play the game but have never played. I think this is great. Fastpitch Softball is one of the most exciting sports there is.

I see some kids that want to start at the high school level. Again, this is awesome. It may be a little tough if you have never played softball before to make your high school team though. It depends on several things, like how many kids are going out, how many teams your school has - Varsity, JV, C team, Freshman team, etc.

Some high schools are only able to field enough players for a varsity. Others only have a Varsity and JV. So in those cases it is hard to say, you may have a better chance there because they really need the players.

So, what kind of workouts are good to get in shape for the upcoming season? Well, you want to get some conditioning started now. If your season is 3-6 months away you have plenty of time to get into good shape. If you only have a couple months well, you better get going strong now.

There are several areas of strength and speed needed to play this game of Fastpitch Softball at an elite level. Probably the area you need to work on the most is your Core. That means work on your midsection, your upper body, your legs, your arm strength. Kind of sounds like your whole body doesn't it. It kind of is.

You will also need to get your throwing arm into throwing shape and get the mechanics sound. A strong, and mechanically sound throwing arm will keep you playing and off the injured reserve list.

Always start your workout with some good dynamic warmups. Stretching is fine but that is really what you should be doing at home and after practice to cool down. Dynamic warmups are moving basically stretches. You want to get your muscles warm before you stretch them or do any hard workout.

Warm muscles will be loose muscles and loose muscles will be quick, strong and healthy muscles.     There are many resources available to find more information about dynamic warmups. I may write about that another time. Just do a search and you will find some good exercises to do.

Here are some good ones to get you started.
Arm Circles: Stand with your arms out to the side and make small circles, then medium, then large circles doing about 10 of each size, then reverse and go back down to small.

Torso Twist: Stand with arms out to side, and twist side to side about 10 times to warm up your lower back. Your back gets a lot of work playing softball.

Butt Kicks: Slowly jog forward kicking your feet up to your butt. Go about 20 feet, turn around and do them back to where you started.

High Knees: Raise your knees high as you slowly jog about 20 feet.

Power Skips: Skip forward as high as you can. This gets your nervous system kick started.

Carioca: This is old school but does a good job of twisting and getting your coordination working.

There are many more good ones but that should get you started.

To get yourself into shape for softball you need to work on your core.  A really good excercise for that is to start on your stomach on the floor, raise up on your elbows and toes and hold that pose for about 30-60 seconds. Drop and rest about a minute, then repeat this 3-5 times. You will definitely feel this in the abs, shoulders and the back of your legs if you are doing it correct.

Other core work can be medicine ball where you are sitting on the floor with your knees bent. Grab the ball and hold it in front of you. Twist from side to side. Another good exercise with the medicine ball is to remain sitting, have a team mate toss the ball to you. Catch it and then toss it back. Do this standing as well for a different set of muscle work.

Pushups are great for working the upper body, arms and shoulders. Try some variations such as the Inch worm.To do this get into a push up position, slowly walk your feet up as far as you can, then walk your hands out until you are flat again. Repeat this across the room or until you can't go anymore. Then do one more.

The Marine style is a tough one. Start in an inverted pushup position with your butt in the air. Then lean forward over your hands and then back. Kind of a wave motion. This one will work your upper arms and shoulders.

Let's move on to your legs. Doing Sqauts is a great exercise to increase your leg strength. This will also help with running speed. Spend time on these and do them slowly and correctly.

Another is to stand with your back at a wall, slowly slide down until you are in a sitting position and extend your arms out in front of you. Hold this for 45-60 seconds. Rest and repeat three times. This is really good for Catchers and Pitchers. Again, these give good gains on running and stopping which is important in fastpitch softball.

Plyometrics drills are great too. Basically this is standing and jumping as high as you can. This is a great explosiveness drill. Fastpitch requires a great amount of explosive movements in every position and play. Stand near a wal and try to jump and touch the ceiling or a mark on the wall. Try to go higher with each jump.

If you have some strong boxes or cardio steps you can use them too. Stand flat footed in front of the step, jump up onto the step or box, then off the other side. Turn and jump back on the box and off the other side. Try to find taller boxes or steps as your strength increases. Try variations of this drill by standing sideways and jumping with one leg. Alternate legs and repeat.

Now let's work your throwing arm. The best way is to just play catch with a team mate. Start out with easy tosses close. Moving back as your arms get warmed up and loose. Gradually work up to full speed throws and as far distance apart as you can.  Do this for 10-15 minutes then gradually cool down by working back closer together and easier tosses.

If you don't have a teammate to play catch with, you can use a batting cage, or pitching net to throw into. ANother great thing is to hand an old blanket or tarp or old piece of carpet over a branch of a tree and throw into it. Start out slow, get warmed up and then move back and really let it all out. You can hang this in your garage on those rainy days or when the weather is bad.

Running short sprints is always good for softball conditioning. You will get really good at these the more you get into softball! Usually about 20 yard sprints is long enough. Remember, the bases are 60 feet apart so not much use sprinting a lot farther than that. Running ladder sprints is a good idea too. Run these until you don't think you can go anymore. Then run one more.

There are a lot of variations of these exercises and many many more drills and exercises that you can do. It is actually good to mix it up and do different ones every so often. That keeps the routine from getting boring and also works on different muscles and in different ways.

Now that we are done with our workout, lets stretch. You will get much better results from stretching now than at the beginning of your workout. Stretch your arms, shoulders, back, legs and your mind. Keep learning more about the game and exercises you can do.

Ok, so we worked on our Core, our legs, our throwing arm, and our sprints. That's a pretty good workout. Try to break these up and do a couple each day. Maybe do the core and legs, then the arms, core and sprints another day. Try to workout 3-4 days a week. You want to give your body time to rest and recover between workouts so give it a day off between workouts.

If you follow this routine for the next 3 months you will be in good shape for fastpitch softball season.

A well known sports site recounts the following, "Shea Stadium. Oct. 28, 1986. Red Sox vs. Mets, World Series, Game 6. Fans and players remember cringe worthy moments like this and wonder what went wrong. And we propose a simple explanation. The guy didn't have the right equipment.

What softball glove should I get, and what should I do to break it in?

i always get the mizuno gloves. I like the design and the comfort of the glove. To break in a glove some people put their glove in the oven for 15 minutes. But the best way to break in a glove is to play a lot of catch everyday

Softball Equipment is Very Expensive!

For those of you that have a Daughter in ASA Fastpitch Softball you know that the right softball equipment can be very expensive.

Then the first time you see your daughter tossing it into the truck or all over her room, you want to pull your hair out.  Well actually you want to do something else, but we won’t go there.

For the longest time we didn’t think too much about it until we started buying two hundred and three hundred dollar softball bats and expensive softball gloves. Not to mention softball sliding shorts and softball batting gloves.

Once they have played for a few years you also start collecting things like bug spray, chap stick, sun tan lotion, softball face shields, asa softball rule books, and on and on.

This last time we went to the South Dakota State High School Softball Tournament keeping track of her softball equipment even became a bigger concern.

Why?

Because we went from one field to another and to try and carry all her softball equipment individually would have been impossible, not to mention embarrassing.

The older she got the more important everything became.  Like I mentioned earlier the softball face shield. This is a great way to protect your daughters face if she plays infield or pitcher. Of course when she was younger the balls weren’t hit hard enough to matter, but now that she is playing third base and pitching they come screaming down the line in High School Softball.

We finally broke down and purchased a softball carrying bag that immediately became the most important part of all her softball equipment. We no longer were hunting for her equipment right before a game.

Yes this was a typical ritual that we went through prior to having a bag to carry her softball equipment. Her mother and I would ask her, let’s see, about a million times, if she had all her stuff together. Then we would get into the truck and all of a sudden she would scream out, where’s my batting gloves or sliding shorts.

The world would come to an end for a moment and then everyone would rush to find the item(s). Of course the whole time her mother and I would be telling her “Didn’t we ask you if you had all your stuff together?”  Shame on us, but now we don’t go through that any more.

Anyway, good luck and by the way if you haven’t already read in my blog my daughter’s team came in third as a sophomore team in the South Dakota State High School Softball Tournament. Did I say that she won defensive player of the year for her team. This is kind of a proud father speaking by the way if you didn’t notice.
