if it was me i would stick with the alloy. i used a stealth composite bat some of the time last year but i had a lot better success with an alloy. no matter what model/brand.

the composite bats are good but it doesn't have the same feel as an alloy. the alloy bat feels more like a snap or pop when you hit the ball. the composite feels like you're using a wooden bat.

it may feel weird for a while hitting with the composite because you've always used alloy.

plus, the composite bats tend to break more easily.

What I Know and Rember About Baseball - My Experience

In the mid 70's growing up in East Tacoma, not the best neighborhood and not quite the worst, there was little to do for a boy whose lot in life was to stay at home with his older sister and younger brother while mom was at work. There were no such things as 'after school activities' or 'select leagues'. We had the Boys Club. A mere 8 blocks from home (if you knew the short-cuts, 13 if you followed the streets). The grumpy old man that ran our boys club, Jim, was actually a monument to commitment. He was still the grumpy old man that ran it when I was in college. Games were on Saturday and the turnout was usually light. Some Dads, some Moms, some Grand-pa's. There was always 2 or more Dads with new shiners they received the night before. Proud of how they mixed it up. Moms were a little more quiet. Covered with scarf's and over-sized sunglasses or just a little extra make-up if the swelling wasn't so bad. Grand-pa's were always the regulars. Chewing on smoldering stogies and arguing about something from the moment the left the parking lot. If they weren't arguing with each other they stood shoulder to shoulder nagging the umpire about his vision. Which I thought was funny as I could only imagine what these seniors could actually see through the pop bottle bottoms they wore for glasses. Morning games always had lighter attendance. Afternoon ones a few more. Standing at the end of the fence were the Dad's sipping out of a paper bag. The Club provided the shirts, hats, bats, catchers gear and the standard GI issue duffle bag to lug it all around in. We provided our own gloves. Pants and shoes were the run what ya brung variety. Gear was predominately purchased at the B&I. With its own celebrity, Ivan the Gorilla, we all went there, we all wore the $4 jeans, we all sported various versions of what was offered, but we never talked about it.

For myself, Rawlings was the brand. 12" glove, genuine leather with a deep well pocket. I used this glove from 1972 to 1983. At a team practice or game. I could identify, on the run, every glove on our team; who it belonged to, what position they played. The balance of the team could do so as well. We didn't have much, be there was a lot of pride in our gloves. How they helped us make the impossible plays. Catch the un-catchable ball. Just like the pro's whose named adorned them. Even after moving to rural Puyallup in 77, players were the same, gloves of greater variety but still everyone know who's was who's.

Not so with current start up players. Gloves are designed to last 1 season. $50 - $75 of annual frustration. The love of the glove is not the same. Disposable tool for a generation proclaiming recycling.

Its just beyond my consideration.

How to Buy the Right Baseball Bat

If you are looking to buy a baseball bat either for yourself or your kid you might want to get some research done with respect to the type of bat you should be buying. The power and speed you generate on your hit will depend directly upon your bat as it would upon your own physical prowess. With this article I hope to provide you with tips and knowledge on buying a baseball bat.

The Material :

There are basically two types of baseball bats, based on the material used in the manufacture, they are wooden and non-wooden. Non-wooden bats are usually made out of aluminum. Wooden bats are made out of ash wood as a norm, but bats made from maple wood are also available. Unless you are in the pro league or if the game regulations prevent you from using a non-wooden bat you would be better off buying yourself an aluminum bat. If you are buying a bat for your kid, who is interested in youth baseball, it would be best to buy an aluminum bat. Aluminum bats not only provide a higher jump off the metal but they are also light compared to their wooden counterparts. A wooden bat can never compare to the lightness and hence the bat speed of the aluminum bats. More expensive metal alloys would allow for higher jump off the impact, sending the ball to a far higher distance than would be possible with a wooden bat. Most of the bats usually last only a couple of seasons at the maximum, if you play a lot your bat might not last more than one season. Each bat is only good enough for that many number of hits, so be careful about the price you are shelling out for your bat. Don’t go in for very cheap bats if you play a lot but ensure that you don’t invest unwisely on over expensive bats either.

Bear in mind that only wooden bats are allowed in pro leagues but most of the youth leagues allow for non-wooden bats.

The Drop factor:

The drop factor plays a very important role in the power of your hit as well as bat speed. Basically the drop factor is calculated by the difference between the length of the bat and the weight of the bat. Usually the minimum drop factor required in league baseball is -3.

As the drop factor increases the bat speed increases or rather the swing speed increases which is logical, since more weight at the barrel would cause the bat to come down faster.

A lower drop factor however can increase the power behind the shot since it is more controlled. Eventually it also depends on the physical strength of the player, if you have greater physical strength you should consider using bats with a higher drop factor.

Usually a normal bat would weight around 1 kg or 33 ounces with the maximum height of 42 inches and no more than 2.75 inches in diameter.

The Grip:

A baseball bat consists of three regions. The barrel which is the sweet spot for any hit, the tip or base which would not produce much impact and the handle. Aluminum bats usually come with a rubber or a cloth grip so that the player can hold the bat better. Wooden bats usually don’t come with a grip but the hold can be improved by rubbing some pine tar onto the handle. Make sure you don’t run too much pine tar as it might be against certain league regulations.

While buying a baseball bat do take into consideration the drop factor and decide the correct length of your bat. The weight of the bat should be comfortable for you so that it does not reduce the power of your hit. A test to determine if a weight suits you would be hold the hold steady at your shoulder level by stretching your arms out, trying maintaining the bat in this position for at-least 10-15 seconds. If you are not able to do so then the weight is too high for you, try going in for a lower weight bat. The weight factor and the height factor (basically the drop factor) will play a very important role in your capacity at hitting continuously with power.

Safety First In Baseball Explained

The safety factor is an important one at all levels of baseball, but it is particularly necessary with beginners. It should not be overlooked at any stage of Little League activity, whether in spring training, tryouts, practice sessions, or games. Coaches and managers might like to post the following list of precautions in a dugout, clubhouse, or dressing room:

1. Have an adult at the field at least a half hour in advance of the scheduled activity to control the group until the start of organized activity.

2. Check the field for obstacles - holes in outfield, stones, a hole in front of pitching rubber, etc.

3. Have the adult space the youngsters who are warming up so that other groups are not endangered by wild throws and muffed catches. The throwing should be parallel.

4. Unless the area is unusually large, have the adult keep the boys from participating in batting practice until the regular workouts begin. Pepper games can be organized if the players are spaced properly, with groups bat ting the ball parallel to each other. There should be no more than four players in each pepper game.

5. Have boys bring a jacket or sweater to wear during warm-up and after workout.

6. Require batters to wear batting helmets during batting practice. Helmets must be worn by batters and base-runners during games.

7. To keep bats from slipping out of batters' hands, use non-slip grips of tape on the handles, or have players use rosin on their hands.

8. Have rules about retrieving foul balls batted into busy streets.

9. The head-first slide should be prohibited except when returning to a base.

10. During sliding practice, bases should be left untied when boys are being taught the fundamentals of sliding.

11. Build a warning track at least six feet out from the fences and back stop, using cinders, gravel, or some similar material.

12. Inspect equipment regularly - particularly batting helmets and catching equipment.

13. Teach players to take good care of all equipment and facilities.

14. Players should not wear watches or rings.

Additional Safeguards

1. Medical examinations should be given to all players prior to the opening of the season.

2. If possible, a physician or nurse should be in attendance at each game.

3. All participants should be covered by accident insurance.

4. The team should possess a first-aid kit, which should be complete and available at every game. It should be in the charge of someone trained to use it.

5. Preseason first-aid instruction should be given all managers and coaches each year.

6. All protective equipment should be of good quality and should fit properly.

7. All dugouts should be screened.

8. All players not participating in the game must remain in the dugouts.

9. Players should be taught the proper techniques of sliding, hitting, fielding, etc.

10. Equipment should not be left on the ground where it can be stepped on and injury result.

Contents of the first-aid kit should include:

2 Bandages 1" x 10 yd.
33 Band-Aid plastic strips
2 Bandages 2" x 10 yd.
1 Burn ointment
1 Bandage 3" x 10 yd.
3 Ammonia inhalants
1 Cotton 1/2 oz.
1 Scissors
1 Adhesive tape 1" x 2-1/2 yds.
1 Antiseptic
1 Gauze 1 yd.
1 First-Aid guide booklet
12 Sterile gauze pads 2" x 2"

Youth Baseball Bats - A Quick Primer

It seems that for such a simple, single-purpose object like a baseball bat, it would be easy to buy one for your athletic son or daughter. But the truth is, there are all kinds of baseball bats. Fear not, the following basics will guide you in the right direction to getting the sure-shot baseball bat your son or daughter desire.

In official leagues, youth baseball bats are sometimes traditional and wooden but more often than not, they are aluminum. Aluminum bats weren't truly introduced until the 1970's and these youth baseball bats are smaller, lighter, but a lot more powerful, than their wooden counterparts. So when shopping for your child's baseball bat, first investigate what kind of bat is required for their league and then determine what length and width is preferable. From then on, it's mostly about body composition and the way the bat interacts with the body during swinging motion.

Longer bats have a better chance of hitting that ball, but the lighter the bat, the more powerful a batter's swing and the faster and farther the ball will go! Also, a thick barrel on a baseball bat can mean a more powerful hit, but at the same time it will also weigh down the bat. It all comes down to your preferred batting style.

Youth Baseball Conditioning

There are many valuable youth baseball conditioning techniques to increase your players’ abilities by maximizing their strength, range of motion, and flexibility. Just as a car can only travel as fast as its engine will allow, in like manner, baseball players can only perform to the degree that their bodies will allow. If coaches, parents and mentors ensure that their players are involved in recommended youth baseball conditioning training, they will be increasing their players’ chances to fulfil their maximum potential.

Here are some advised youth baseball conditioning techniques that are recommended for youth baseball coaches for the development of their players:

• Pitching Better through Swimming - Swimming can actually strengthen the shoulder muscles and enable pitchers to throw the baseball harder while protecting pitchers from devastating shoulder injuries. It is recommended that pitchers swim in free style for two minutes with a series of 4 repetitions. If the player can not swim, then the pitcher can stand waist deep in water under adult supervision and push the water away from the body with a hard thrust and fingers spread apart. This should be repeated for 2 minutes at a time.

• Sprint to Success - One of the traditional youth baseball training programs remains the best. Players need to build up their endurance in order to play the entire game with strength and energy. Wind sprints are the best way for youth baseball players to build up their endurance and, at the same time, bond with their teammates. If your players run wind sprints as a team or in bunches, such as pitchers, catchers, infielders and outfielders, you will be building up their endurance and the team will become closer as a unit. Ten 60 yard sprints are a good way to start, and you can lengthen the distance and repetitions over time.

• Squeeze that Ball - Another simple youth baseball conditioning exercise can be done everywhere from the ball field to the schoolyard and even to bed. Baseball players can increase their wrist strength by squeezing a rubber Spalding ball. Yes, these pink balls are still of infinite value to baseball players – pitchers, to increase the speed of their pitch; hitters by increasing their bat speed and, therefore, the distance of their drives; and fielders by increasing the strength of their throws.

• Stretch Before Games – Stretching and warm-ups are a key element of baseball conditioning training protocols to prevent injuries. Prior to every game and practice, baseball coaches should lead their team in a regular series of stretching and warm-up exercises for at least 10-12 minutes. Before the players begin playing baseball, make sure to cover all major muscle groups including shoulders, legs, arms, hips, and back.

Of course these are just a few, simple youth baseball conditioning exercises among many. Baseball coaches should be familiar with a wide variety of exercises and should weave these into a more holistic conditioning training plan that is appropriate to the age of their players.

Combined with a variety of baseball drills that make the game fun and build the fundamental skills needed to play, a strong baseball conditioning training regimen will ensure that players reach the top of their game and avoid unnecessary injury.

Which is the better baseball bat ? A composite material or an Aluminum material ?

I am buying my sons baseball bat for high school and being that they are $400 I would like to try to get it right the 1st time. In little league and travel we have tried easton stealth, anderson, exogrid the anderson and exogrid seems to be the best but im undecided for the
-3 drop bat for school

Composites get better "pop." Once broken in they are loads better than aluminum. Personally I like the sound of Aluminum when I play slow pitch, but the difference in this worth Mayhem Composite I just bought (not even broken in) is amazing.

The composite when the material breaks down (like a graphite/fiber glass) acts like a trampoline to the baseball/softball.

You can go with a lighter bat than usual and get power from the bat speed as well as the composite material.

Sorry I don't have the specifics for baseball bats (when I played it was all aluminum), but that should give you an idea especially since it's the same tech as slo-pitch softball..

Youth Baseball Bats: Size Matters!

Choosing the right youth baseball bats size for a little league baseball player is quite a headache. It may seem so simple, but the real dilemma of finding the perfect bat really requires your meticulousness. To help you out in this chaos, this article will give you a brief overview on what to look for in youth baseball bats. The player's height and weight matters in picking the right one. However, this is not always applicable since a little leaguer ages and grows fast. Their bodies and strength don't always match their age.
